So, I'm an idiot -

98 Fazer 600, Full tank of fuel, decided to put some redex in (as I usually do every other tank) pop the fuel cap, unscrew lid from redex, it slipped out of my hands... Plop! Straight in the tank. Any suggestions on the best way to get it out? How much damage will it actually cause in there?

Many thanks.

I'd probably drain the fuel, take the tank off, turn upside down and shake away.

I wouldn't think it would do much damage to be fair, I'd ride this tank of fuel until it is near empty, then do as above.

But won't the higher amount of redex cause damage?

I think he dropped the cap in, not the bottle.

I'd get it out as soon as you can if it were me - not that I'd think it could damage something, but more it might float or sink and block your fuel supply or breather or something?

It's just the lid from the bottle, I think it's floating, I can hear it knocking into the sides of the tank. It doesn't want to float its way to the filler hole though Sad

If the cap was left in there, would the petrol start to break it down?

Maybe if it were made of bread. Plastics are pretty resilient to fuels as far as I know.

Most are, although I think most bottle caps are made from Polypropylene which will melt fairly fast.

Although I imagine it will probably be HDPE seeing as it has to hold the ATF (Redex) in.

OP why are you putting Redex in your tank?

As in automatic transmission fluid? Hydraulic oil?

Can't be surely? The last lot of ATF used was in my previous Volvo's front shocks & was fairly thick stuff. The last time I used redex it was very watery, same sort of thickness as white spirit/parrafin.

Could be one of the major components of for sure, and I still don't think it really does anything, but I'm not sure it's 100% ATF.

I read into it a while ago, IIRC it's mostly a petrol/ATF mix then marked up 10 times.

It's fairly common to put 2 stroke or ATF in diesels. It burns hotter, supposedly cleaning injectors and adds some lubricant to the fuel pump.

A quick look on amazon suggests the smallest fishing nets are around 2.5" diameter, which wouldn't fit.

You could make a net using some bent wire and the material from one of those body polisher things that women always seem to keep in the shower?

get it 3/4 full and use chopsticks?
Maybe use a lighter to see where it is in the tank.

I did the same thing except it was my ignition key, fixed it with some chewing gum and a stick, be aware it may be better to use blutack as the chewing gum went very sticky in the petrol but it worked a treat.

Removing the tank is not that hard - I've done it a couple of times (once to fit a new reg/rectifier). You could then just drain the fuel, open the fuel filler cap, tip tank upside down and rattle the lid out. If it went in, it'll come out!

Massive thin pliers, like the sorts for getting hose clips off on cars, should fit a thin pair into the tank opening

Well, I got it out in the end.
After it tauntingly floated past the tank opening several times, I just couldn't get at it. Took the tank off, drained it, then spent a good 15 minutes trying to jiggle the tank and coax it out.

Thanks for everyone's advice. Lesson learned - don't use Redex Very Happy
