Hi Folks - just got an ER5 as first "biggie" and need some advice. It's been stood for months with previous owner so needed some work doing - new filters and rear tyre initially.

It tends to run hot after a while, was wondering if this is normal? I've checked coolant levels and this is around the lower mark and need some advice on which coolant to get to top it up or flush it out with new as I don't know how long the current stuff has been in.

Cheers

Well... that isn't a great gauge of heat Laughing

Coolant bubbling out of overflow?

Changed oil and coolant recently? Just standard antifreeze/water mix is what goes in my bikes. Anything from Tesco.

ER5s dont, they have basic as hell clocks. Mine was ridden in winter and was warm regardless. Laughing

Nope, no temp gauge, just a red light indicator. No coolant bubbling up. It's the first one I've had that needed coolant so figured to ask for advice. Had the oil changed with new filter, also had new air filter fitted.

coolant is a change every three years on my service schedule

if it is on the bottom it may be for a reason, like so it doesn't overflow when its running, lots of triumphs suffer from this, leave it on the minimum to stop coolant leak during heat expansion

silkolene pro cool or castrol motorcycle coolant will be fine, just use straight from the bottle

Main thing is don't mix old style blue/green antifreeze with OAT pink/red/orange antifreeze.
Best to drain, flush and fill up with 50/50 mix
