I have an odd noise from my CE boiler.its when the pump stops when it switches off and when it stops after it does what I think is a routine trun over of the system every now and then. Its like a pipe banging but with a bit of a juddering noise. Its a Viessmann Vitodense 200. Any ideas? It had the main pump changed about six months ago and its about five years old. Its always made this noise and no change after the pump was changed.

Air locked maybe? Or not enough pressure?

Pressures fine and engineer bled and repressurised the expansion chamber when the new pump was put in. Its not a loose pipe either.

There's loads of reasons why it could be making the backfiring noise. Unless you're knowledgeable about boilers and gas installations then it's not a DIY job.

I think the 200 has an internal diverter valve that makes a bit of a strange kind of groaning noise when it resets.

Is the boiler pre-empting the intake of air sound a plumber makes when you ask for a quote to fix it? Razz

You could park your bike outside a British Gas store and ask advice.

Nah...he'd more likely park outside the shop over the road just to piss them off.

Could be any number of things, how olds the rest of the heating system? Do u have thermostatic radiator valves fitted? Is there a bypass underneath the boiler on the heating circuit (appreciate you prob won't know this)

Worst case scenario is boiler heat exchanger is scaled /blocked... Struggling to move the heat from it results in the water boiling inside which can cause banging.. This is new boiler time tbh.

Best case, something simple like no bypass or non bi directional trvs so the valves are banging through reverse flow..

Turn on all taps & let 'em run for a minute. Try & staunch the delivery briefly with a wet tea towell so that water backs up in the pipes. Then turn 'em all off downstairs first. Bleed the rads when hot then bleed the boiler. Treat it as you would hydraulic brakes. Boiler = MC, pipes = lines, caliper nipple = taps.

Ed: Hold on before you do anything! You first need to know that I ain't Corgi registered & this... Shocked
