Yes. I run one with 8GB of ram, a DVD drive and WHS2011.
Lozzy and my laptops are set up for auto back ups, it runs my film library and streams to everything in the house often running 3 streams without any noticeable degradation in quality.

Has 4 drive caddies an internal bootable USB and an external bootable Esata so can be used with lets say 2 2.5inch SSD's as the bootable disc in raid hidden where the DVD drive goes and a further 4x4tb SATA 3.5 discs in the caddies.

Doesn't have USB3.0 or sound and only VGA but a USB3.0 card is only £7 and just about any low power HDMI low profile card will work as well.

Best bit is it pulls very very little power, around 35w so less than a light bulb at idle and considerably less than a NAS.

If your planning on getting one of them there's usually some rebate going from HP so a lot do the time they can be had for around £100. Although the new version, the gen 8 is out now so soon the older ones should get cheaper.

https://www8.hp.com/uk/en/products/proliant-servers/product-detail.html?oid=5379860

They are good for ESXI and can run a few VMs easily, run freeNAS etc Thumbs Up

The £100 rebate offer ended last year Sad
However, the price of G7 has dropped by £100 Smile

I have the previous N40L excellent little server, used to run ESXi on it but eventually opted for win server 2008.

It's from this I would be serving my films to xbmc.

That is the plan.

I've been looking at OMV, seems to be the easiest OS for my needs.

I've had 3 of the earlier HP Media Smart Servers.

The Intel ones are absolutely wonderful things, doubly so if you are willing to hose the warranty. Slot in a Q8200S and you get a monumental performance increase for very little hassle or money.

The AMD variants by comparison do not have the same upgrade potential, not so much of an issue for backups and streaming to other PCs and such, but it may haunt you if you start asking it to transcode high bit rate video.

Personally, look around for an EX490 or EX495 first.

As Sickpup mentions, the power consumption of these is hugely impressive. My modded Core 2 Quad used less power at the plug whilst running with all 4 disks spinning than my Lenovo TD200 uses whilst it's switched off Shocked

Ah you got one in the end, I'm still dithering. How did you set it up in the end?

So far
Gaffer taped a 2.5" 120GB sata hdd into the ODD bay
OMV installed to 120GB
2x3TB striped.
Copying data over at the moment, about 5hrs for 2TB

To do
Copy over 2TB from old NAS.
Setup a SQL server for the XBMC shared library
Setup Thunderbird profile storage on the new NAS
Setup NFS shares for Raspbmc to access.

Wicked, although I'm just looking at the ex490/495 as suggested, cost difference is a bit of a dampener.

My plan if I ever enact it would be to fit a video card and use is as a media pc as well as a server to save me arsing about with an intermediate device to the TV, as long as its not too noisy that is.

You can get a half decent low profile gfx card for about 40quid that would do the job.

I may end up bumping the r-pi off and replacing it with NobKitten one day.
Just gonna see how this plays out in the mean time.

Looking into it now, still umming at the hardware a bit. As a note, my very techy mate (who has his own server rack) suggested xpenology and I found this, possibly worth a nose for you? https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/98649-hp-n54l-xpenology-cheap-functional-server-capable-of-720p-transcoding-via-pms/

Why buy a box to transcode on the fly?

Raspbmc does 1080p DTSHD without a problem.

Honestly? My knowledge is limited and outdated. Was considering a microserver delivering content over a network to something like a roku box as I'm not changing my non smart TV, it works perfectly, NAS effect. Or just slotting it under the TV and acting as a NAS and media PC to cut out the middleman.

Never played with the pi so it is something else to consider, need to do moar reading Thumbs Up

Why do you need a 250gb ssd for an operating system that is less than 5gb?

That USB stick will be good for the pi Thumbs Up
