Had my first off this morning
Basically the car in front got cut up on a roundabout, slammed the brakes and I hit him. Fairings are cracked and brackets are bent so guessing the bike is a write off.
The problem is, Im covered but my policy is Social and domestic pleasure and my details are an unemployed full time student. Ive only just got a job for summer and hadn't informed my insurer of my change of circumstances. Any ideas of whats likely to happen? Not expecting any kind of pay out on the bike anyway because of excess and Im TPFT and seeing as I hit a vehicle from behind Im instantly liable. ____________________ Yamaha rxs100 > Kawasaki ZZR600 > Kawasaki ZX6R > Honda Hornet 600 > Honda Bros 400 > Suzuki SV650S K2

You can see here approaching the roundabout from the left of the picture, the right lane is right turn only. The car decided last minute he was going straight on so the car in front of me had to brake hard and I had nowhere to go. ____________________ Yamaha rxs100 > Kawasaki ZZR600 > Kawasaki ZX6R > Honda Hornet 600 > Honda Bros 400 > Suzuki SV650S K2

It's up to them to prove you weren't on the way to Tesco, not up to you to prove anything at all. You could, of course, just have been out for an early morning ride before work.
If you did happen to be commuting on a policy that doesn't cover you to commute, I believe they will settle the 3rd party side of the claim as per usual, and then can seek to recover the costs of the claim from you afterwards, whether they bother or not is another question.
Given my trust of insurance companies to try and extract every penny out of us, I think I would have been going shopping on this occasion. ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock. |

The karma you get from manning up and accepting liability more than counters any misrecollection about the purpose of your trip. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

As implied above (sort of), insurers will argue that you were not covered for that nature of riding and will get out of paying etc. It does say on just about every insurance doc I've ever possessed that false details MAY result in invalidated cover, irrespective of the size of detail (minor, major, what?). I would absolutely not take that chance.
So what did you get from Tescos? ____________________ My deviantArt gallery - My Youtube profile

To be fair, he's half right. OP only has TPFT cover, so the insurer is only on the hook for damage to the third party, which they can't get out of irrespective of the lack of commuting cover.
That being said, they CAN still cancel the policy, and if they want to be dicks about it, they can pursue OP to recover anything they have to pay out. Also, if plod were having a particularly bad day, they could do him for riding without insurance. So at the time of the accident, it's very important that OP was not commuting. ____________________ Current Bikes: 1983 Honda VF400FD / 2003 Honda VT750 Shadow

What mathewculver actually wrote was - in the context of declaring commuting use - all wrong.
There's a nuanced "yehbut" there, but he didn't choose to explore it, so I'm not going to cut him any slack.
Making an assertion like that and presenting it as unqualified fact to an audience that might be daft enough to believe him and act on it doesn't incline me to "be fair". It gets my dander up, and no mistake. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
