PostPosted: 11:48 - 15 Aug 2014    Post subject: New build won't boot, pulling my fucking hair out UPDATE PG3 Reply with quote

Hi all,

Recently put this together as I was getting bored with console gaming.

I replaced the motherboard I had originally (MSI Z97 GD65) with the gigabyte one because I wanted to hackintosh but the MSI board isn't compatible. But that being said, I know everything works. The only thing that's changed is the motherboard.

I got the first one, got my CPU, CPU cooler, RAM and a SSD plugged in with an HDMI lead to my monitor and it booted but displayed nothing on the monitor. No BIOS, nada. Kept saying "Checking Signal" or some shit. Eventually the monitor goes into standby because there's no signal to it, and I've tried several HDMI cables so I know it isn't that.

Thought the board was shagged so returned it, got another one that's just arrived. Same issue. Surely I can't be that daft that can I? Mad

Cheers. Thumbs Up

Does your monitor have an input selection button? The ones at work we have to manually cycle between DVI or VGA depending on what cable the PC uses, the monitor won't automatically choose what input to use. Have a look in the monitor menu and see if you can force it to use the HDMI input.

Do you hear the post beep?

Try the select input thing as above.

Failing that remove the SSD all all but 1 stick of RAM, if still no joy switch the sticks.

You have got the ram in the Correct clots haven't you? Mine has 6 slots and you must put the sticks in specific slots depending on how many you have.

Failing that try pluging in your GFX card too.

Process of elimination, its a fairly complex build, pull everything you can down to minimum needed to boot. If the mobo has bulit in VGA try and use that and disconnect the graphics card as well. Use the minimum memory the mobo will handle (some insist on matched pairs etc)

Try and use a wired keyboard and mouse if you can.

When you can get it to boot reconnect bits one by one.

Good luck its probably something trivial.

It doesn't, but I've had my laptop plugged into it to make sure it wasn't the monitor and it displayed straight away. Laptop has a VGA port as well, so it's essentially the same as the PC output-wise.

Aye, tried it with the previous board and this one. No dice.

No, but for some really irritating reason it doesn't have a speaker. the MSI one didn't either. They've got these LED readouts for error codes instead but it's not even spitting out an error code. I tried booting it without the SSD, RAM in each slot (I've only got 1 stick at the moment) and it didn't work. I also read that you needed to dick with the BIOS to get it to accept 1866 RAM but I tried a 4GB 1366 stick from my HTPC (Same brand/type of RAM, just different MHz) and it didn't work either.

I can't see 2 motherboards (supposedly high quality ones at that) being DOA. Rolling Eyes Seems it may be the case though.

Mobo's don't come with speakers it should have came with your case. Plug it in and listen for a beep code.

That RAM isn't on the Approved Vendor List, so that could be the issue. Before returning it use some RAM they actually say will work in the paperwork. This is stuff you should have checked before ordering.

I'd also suggest starting again from scratch take everything out and refit.

I have a GPU but it isn't installed. This is all from the onboard ports. I haven't even managed to see anything yet, much less arse about with the BIOS!

I really don't recall getting one but I can go and scrounge one from somewhere. Looking online NZXT don't ship speakers with their cases any more, which is odd and a bit tight as they're not exactly expensive either. Considering the case alone was 100 quid plus, it wouldn't have gone amiss.

I did check it when I ordered the original motherboard, I didn't think it was an issue when I ordered the other board - considering it's a decent brand and well known I thought it would be okay with another major brand mobo.

I'll go and find some RAM that's apparently compatible then, and try that.

I wonder when that changed I ordered a NZXT case 20 months ago, it came with one. You should be able to pull one from any PC of the last 20 years. If not one would be a couple of quid from Maplin/PC repair shop.

*shrug* No idea. I didn't get one though.

I'll nip to the local PC shop and get one anyway.

If I need to replace the RAM, is this going to be okay? I checked it against the compatibility list but a second opinion is always good.

It's not on the list as far as I can see.

I'd get the speaker to check for a beep code and try a different PSU before changing memory, the memory might not the issue, the Vendor list isn't definitive.

I can't really understand the list much, I'm trying to find a single 8GB stick that matches but all that come up are 8GBx4 kits which are both expensive and unwanted.

Any recommendations? 1600Mhz preferably.

I know for a fact that the PSU works. I used it right up until the new mobo got here and then it wouldn't display anything. It's brand new as well.

Pretty bizzare that two boards are doing the same thing. I would say you can safely eliminate the board, unless you've been extremely unlucky to get two fucked boards.

Next step I would be looking at the RAM / PSU. I've had faulty sticks cause a total non boot on the PC and also had faulty PSUs that have caused non boots.

If you've eliminated the monitor by checking it on a laptop and it came on straight away, it could be that fact you're using HDMI and not DVI?

You can't even see the BIOS though to check, can you?

Quick and simple test to get you pointed in the right direction.

Turn it on, give it 10 seconds, tap the power button again.

Does it switch off?

If it stays on then it's not posting, start looking at ram/expansion cards, can also simply be a duff motherboard.

If it switches off on the button, it's posting but you've got a video issue.

It doesn't

The manual says it does. Wink

Make sure that's set to HDMI. If the onboard video still doesn't work then try fitting the graphics card and then try the HDMI on that and then the VGA on that.

Can you try using a different monitor?

The CPU is seated correctly and you've not managed to bend any of the pins?

Try plugging a keyboard, once the pc is switched on the keyboard should light up and look 'normal', what happens if after you've switched the PC on if you press crt-alt-del?

Yeah, I thought as much. 2 duffers is rare as rocking horse shit. I know for a fact the PSU works as it powered the build previous to returning the MSI mobo and I didn't have any problems. It's a decent PSU (gold rated I think?) so it's not likely to have fried anything nor have shat itself. I've tried HDMI and VGA and neither worked on the new motherboard although they worked on the old one and on the laptop.

I can't see the BIOS at all.

It's definitely set to HDMI as it's worked with other HDMI outputs. I've tried the GTX770 and it didn't work either.

I've tried a different monitor (An old as fuck VGA monitor Laughing) and it didn't work either. CPU is seated correctly and no pins are bent.

It doesn't go off so it's not POSTing in that case. I have to flick the PSU power switch to get it to go off.

I'm going to take a stab at the RAM being the wrong type. It's not on the recognised list so it would be the obvious thing.

It would be quite rare/unusual for RAM to not be compatible, unless it is some super duper high speed overclocked RAM. Just because it's not on the approved list doesn't mean it's not going to work, just means they haven't tested it.

If you haven't already I would be taking everything apart and starting again. Have you actually checked what configuration the RAM needs to go in. Some motherboards will only work with a pair of RAM sticks in channel 1 or whatever.

Ditch the HDMI for now, use VGA, it's a much safer option and go grab a speaker.

It's possibly worth getting down Maplin first and getting a PC speaker. You 'should' get a different beep code between no ram and incompatible ram. So pulling all the ram out and trying to boot should hopefully give you a little confirmation that it is indeed that.

Do you get anything displaying on the LED code panel thing on the motherboard next to the ram slots?
