Anyone use a set of road wheels and a set of mud wheels?

Just wondering what gets done with running two sets? Do you have two sets of chain and sprockets? Just wondering because I'd imagine you'd run different gear ratios for each application? What about wheel spacers? Two sets of those too?

I'm just compiling a list of stuff to get for my other set of wheels and just wondering if there's anything that needs to be seriously considered.

I have road wheels and dirt wheels on my xr. I have the road wheels on at the moment so I am using a smaller sprocket and shorter chain with a separate set of spacers. The dirt wheels have the original sprocket and brake disc still attached and if I were to change between the two regularly I would probably use a second (longer) chain. Mostly because I can find the bit that was cut out of the current chain. For the front I also use a bigger brake disc and therefore a caliper extender.

So two sets of everything and just leave the wheels, sprox and discs bolted together.

Have a just got hold of road set now for the kmx.

Using same size disk and same gearing for now. Keeps it simple.

I've been doing some research and I can run a 14/48 on road and a 13/48 offroad using the same length chain but with the wheel shifted back an extra 5mm. DO you use a separate chain for each sprocket kit? Or would I use the same chain but with two separate sprockets?

Already got new discs on one set, I wasn't going to keep swapping them over as well.

Wasn't going to go oversized front disk route anyway, I don't really ever feel the need for stronger brakes anyway, it would be nice I suppose but not necessary.

If one is supermoto, I'd gear up for that if possible - partly because the wheel tends to be smaller, so is down geared a bit.

So may need a second chain too.

Apart from that, swap rear wheel.

If front is supermoto, typically you'll have a caliper adaptor that will push it out a bit for a bigger supermoto disc.

Gearing swapping between the same size wheels depends on the bike and riding done - I never bothered on the KTM690 for instance - once I got the akrapovic map on it was ok low down and still not too bad for distance. (Would prefer a wider ratio gearbox anyway, however.)

Interesting topic.
I do have both 14"/12" Offroad, and 12"/12" SM Mags, for the road going pit bike. As well as all the extra discs, sprockets and spacers to facilitate a relatively swift change over.

However its a bit of a pig because I only have one set of axels and like to use SM sliders Mad . I also have to loosen the front SM disc to get the caliper on/off it Mad . And I've recently been running the following gearing: SM 18/31, Dirt 17/41, which means faffing with flywheel cover/sprocket bolts Mad .

I do however use the same chain, whilst junking the near maxed out adjusters for dirt (as visible), as its tension is perfect theres no adjustment needed. But all in, its about a 1/2hr job.

I'd love to try some offroad wheels on the KTM690 SMC.
My master plan is to buy a newish KTM EXC300 for off-roading, and then see about switching the wheels for a bit Razz *.

*Although, I fear due to the SMC's forks, this may prove difficult, if not impossible Confused .

Have fun OP Thumbs Up . Post a vid if you can get a swap done in under 5 minutes Mr. Green.

Standard sized wheels, not going to worry about SM'ing her, it's only a TTR. Just something to save the knobblies while commuting or travelling on her or road rides with mates.

My pit bike has two 12" motard wheels and a 14"/12" combo for mud with a different rear sprocket for each wheel. Same front sprocket for each application and I believe the PO used the same chain for each combo, with the adjusters maxed out on the road set-up. It has discs on each set, same size for each. Problem is the pitbike doesn't have an inner wheel bearing spacer for the rear dirt wheel. FOr conversion on that bike, I reckon about 40 minutes, because I would change to the off-road plastics as well and need to faff about with spacers and now I think about it the dirt sprocket isn't bolted to the dirt wheel so would need to pinch the bolts from road wheel as well.

For TTR, I have same sized discs front and rear for both wheels, just wondering if it's worth getting some spacers for the other set as well. Currently, I need to swap the rear sprocket over from each wheel as well. Again, why I was wondering about another chain and sprocket set. Only swapped over a couple of times once yesterday and again this morning and it's about 40 minutes again, including getting the spacers out of each wheel and swapping sprocket and finding something to hold the front end of the floor as well. Must invest in a stand. Embarassed

MX Jack is a win Thumbs Up
Or paddock pair.

I guess its a bit of a ballache on any bike.
If it took less than 10 minutes I'd do it every weekend. So as to enjoy the 180cc on the green lanes (instead of a 110cc) whilst still using it to blitz "my" empty carpark on Wednesday evenings. Razz

Very much doubt the SMC rear will fit the EXC - the 690 enduro rear is a little wider than the EXC and doesn't fit.

Other way around is ok if you've got a cush drive wheel for the narrower axle, as you can swap spindle spacers and space the disc out by a little too to make it fit.

What size does is SMC front spindle? A 2003 onwards EXC will be 26mm, but to put the EXC wheel in the SMC you'd have all sorts of disc issues due to the 21" using a two pin sliding caliper.

Seems your absolutely right G, As just found this:https://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=936479
Which is interesting, but confirms it to be a headache.

As OP used Exc300 forks, I suppose, if i could be arsed (unlikely) I could swap the entire front ends over maybe. But that still leaves the rear.

Seems spindle size is the same up front but forks need changing and clamps for stability.
