Just got a new rig running this weekend with (for me) an awesome level of power. So I installed Skyrim as the most graphically intensive game I had to hand.

Auto detect set graphics to ultra high. Mint.

Loaded game, got about twenty seconds in and the whole thing died.

Tried again with it windowed and speedfan running so I could see the temperatures and watched my GPU temperature soar up to 50 with a little flame next to it. As the windowed game was 720 rather than 1080 it didn't die this time, but I'm still worried.

Should I buy some awesome supercooler case? I only have room for one case fan on my current one. The previous owner of this graphics card (Radeon R9 280, 3 GB) tells me it's not compatible with water cooling, so that's not an option

50 what? 50c? That's not hot for a GPU. Certainly nowhere near hot enough to crash the PC.

Check your CPU temps (download RealTemp, it's free), because that over-heating will crash your PC.

Run Prime95 (free) while running RealTemp and see what temps you get on the CPU.

My PC runs at tems of around 65C for the CPU and 70C for the GPU.

It's ran at these temps for around 3 years now.

Roughly every 6 months, it climbs a little, I give it a quick blast with an airduster, and i's back to where it was

Is the Skyrim original copy or cracked version?

If the R9 has got it's OEM cooler, it should work no matter what. The same applies to the CPU. The only thing, that can go wrong is the PSU not giving it enough power under load. Thumbs Up

EDIT: Are you sure you plugged all the power wires into the graphics card? Razz

Although I needed some adapters, yes it's all plugged in correctly.
I'm worried it's pulling too much from one power line though. I've tried to split it as much as I can so it's drawing power from three wossnames rather than one.

CPU heat could also be the issue, I just put the stock cooler on for now and it's not particularly impressive. I have a huge one that I was using on my old PC so I'll have to unbolt that and give it a go.

Is there any way I can monitor voltage distribution outside of the BIOS?

I googled around and min. PSU power required is 500w and the card takes 250w at full load.

If you don't have at least 600w+, this could be your problem.

I'm using an 850W PSU

Either this one or one that looks a lot like it:

Oh, Skyrim is legit actually money paid for version. Got the Elder Scrolls Anthology box set, even though the first two games are so old they're available on freeware and require DOSbox to run.

The R9 280x is fine for around 80 to 85c so that shouldn't be your issue.

What power supply are you using?

Three hours later and have you tested the CPU temp with Prime95 and RealTemp yet? Not much point people trying to help you if you don't eliminate the obvious potential solutions. I mean, how the fuck do voltages come higher on your list of things to check than temps? Confused Especially as you've revealed you're using a crap stock cooler.

Full spec:

AMD 8350 4.0GHz Octocore
Asus M5A97 R2.0 AMD Socket AM3+ Motherboard
Radeon R9 280
8GB DDR3 clocked at 1833MHz

Cooler above.
Case is just a cheap one I've had for years, only has one rear fan. Did have one on the side but I had to remove it to make room for the giant CPU cooler on my old motherboard. Bought the case primarily for the blue lighting strips on the front. Don't judge me!

And have you drilled enough holes in that case? Because cases are the most critical component in a PC regarding it running correctly.

That and the voltage on a rail in an 850w PSU.

Take the side panel off the case.

Then buy new case with decent cooling.

Hetzer, RealTemp doesn't support my CPU apparently. I need somthing that keeps a log if I'm looking at temps so I can see what they were at time of death.

Case is full of holes so air flow shouldn't be a problem.

wut? Laughing

If realtemp won't work then try coretemp. Run that with prime95 for a few hours to see what your temps do.

Look dude.

You can either ignore the advice being given, or you can buy a new case.

Either way, I dont give 2 fucks.

You can have something full of holes, but unless you have something pulling in cool air all the holes in the world are gonna do SFA.

Post a pic of your pc with and without the side panel on.

Could you recommend a case? I'll post pics later, got lots to do today first unfortunately.

Before I buy a case though, I'd like to know that I do need one.
I'll download the software recommended above as soon as I can and report back.

I would like to monitor the rail voltage too, but that won't be necessary if the temps go fubar.

Modern case: Anything that can be fitted with 120x120mm and bigger, fans in the front and back panel, with the PSU mounted on the bottom of the case. Thumbs Up

I use Thermaltake M9 VI1000BNS (ancient old and was very cheap) I can fit 3x120x120mm fans in the front panel, 1x120x120 back. If I wanted a new case, I'd get the same but with the PSU mounted on the bottom of the case. I use 2 low speed fans front and 1 low speed fan back, everything runs cool and silent, 8 years now.

EDIT: I'd never get a case with the top mounted fans (holes for them), the PC gets full of dust as it is. Also taking off the side panel won't help the cooling, since you disrupt the airflow in the case.

PC will always get dusty inside if you have no filters on fans.

If you have more air coming into the case than you have going out, AND all the fans are filtered then it should stay clean inside as all the all will be drawn through the filtered fans.

However, if you have more air going out than you do coming in with fans, then even with filters the case will get dirty regardless as it will pull air in through all the little gaps and holes in panels everywhere to equalise the pressure meaning your filters do fuck all.

Not if there is practically zero airflow to begin with.
