Hi Guys,

Im going 8-9 days touring to the South of France at the end of the month with a mate. Super excited about it as I've never done anything like this before!

My bike is a 2001 Honda Hornet 600 which i've only owned for a few weeks and had to do a fair bit of work on. Im confident she's in good shape now but breakdown cover is a must anyway. I don't have any breakdown cover in the UK and only looking for cover for 9 days in france. Have tried the RAC and they want £100!!

Any suggestions?

I'm off on a jolly in sept as well and have been looking for similar type of cover, try moneysupermarket.com for a comparison of what's available, my bike is newer than yours so I'd imagine that will reflect some price difference but the best quote I had was for £25 through a company called QDOS. Some policy's I looked at where the type where ypo pay out of your own pocket then claim back once get back so be mindful of what you sign upto.

I'm looking to take mine out at the end of the month so il be interested to see what others have to say regards this. I'd gladly pay a little extra for a product that has been tried and tested than take one out purely because it's the cheapest..

I used this one when I went to Germany first time. I never had to actually use them so no idea how good they are. The next time I went I had insurance with Carole Nash which includes European breakdown cover.

Search BCF for ADAC, there's plenty of threads about them

Masses of cover for about £70 for the whole year and covering the whole of Europe.

Perhaps it would be worthwhile taking out an annual policy. I do tend to breakdown all the time haha

Whilst searching for my cover I checked out the ADAC policy after reading about it on here and hearing nothing but positive feedback on other forums and google searches, however after contacting them via twitter regards their policies being available to UK residents they replied that it wasn't. I know there are phone numbers posted in previous threads regards this and other members do have policies with them so this may be untrue, has anyone actually had to use them that has a UK based policy ? There rates are very good and like I say the feedback is very good, could be something worth pushing for if it suits.
My bike is less than 2yrs old so it is covered by Honda for breakdowns in the UK so don't need a annual policy, strangely though only VFR's are covered by the 2yr cover in Europe

Bike is 13 years old. No one will cover me through the comparison sites so will have to spend more time looking!

The one I used, which I linked above, says this in their FAQs:

Vehicle Rescue Direct wrote:
Q. What types of vehicle do you cover?
A. We are able to cover any private, leased or company car, or motorcycle, which is up to and including 15 years old. Vehicles must not exceed 3500kg in gross weight, 5.1m in length, 2m in height, or 2.1m in width. We are unable to cover vehicles which are being used for business purposes.

I've done the Alps a few times and the key thing I've always found is to check which countries you're covered for. Some will ask you to tell them, others expect you to read their paperwork after you've paid.

If you're only going to France, then no big deal, but also make sure you're upto date with their policies of breathalysers and things as they're quite keen.

Does your insurance company not offer cover? probably the same cost for a couple of weeks as to have a yearly policy.

Simple.

Good maintenance, change excessively worn parts BEFORE you go, change them back to use them up when you get back. This includes electronics and maybe upgrading them to parts which fail less often Reg/recs there are various kinds.

Doubling up on common component failures. My old CBR6 had 2 reg/rec the original honda and a ZX6R one. My current CBR has two ZX6R reg recs.

Crash protectors.

A handful of limp back home spares, a cable repair kit, a split link, handful of cable ties. Araldite. Tin snips. Stab through tyre repair kit.

Then when you go don't ride to your absolute limits. So you don't crash in the first place.

Did you contact them through twitter?

There has been talk of no cover for non german residents so I asked one of their sales people when I was in Germany and she said i was no problem.

You are the member, not the vehicle so age is not an issue.

I posted on another ADAC thread the reply I received regarding non-German members, and ultimately there isn't an issue for uk residents becoming members, but your advised to take out the plus+membership

Decided to just go for an annual policy as playing £25 for 9 days seems a little step and i plan on breaking down a lot over the next year.

Called the ADAC on 00492214727444 and asked politely to speak to an english speaker (they answered in German), i was told to call 0049221472747 and after a little time on hold got through to an english speaker called Henri.

I said i was after european cover (including UK) with no time restrictions and he said i need their plus membership which costs 84 euros (£67) for the year. Paid over the phone by card and had him email me a copy of my membership card (received) as it can take 10 days for my docs to arrive).

Can categorically say they ARE still taking UK customers Smile

Downside is it took 10 mins on the phone clarifying all the details i had given are correct so cost me about a fiver
