I'm looking to invest in a decent pair of boots for a max of £250, the TCX S-R1 has caught my eye because of the Metacarsal Control System (M.C.S.) feature as I've fractured a couple metacarsal bones in an previous fall.

Would you recommend other boots over this? I ride a super moto style bike but its mostly street, the enduro style boots like the TCX Pro 2.1 look a bit stiff for a daly commute?

From personal experience I know that trainers do not protect you in a fall - its not worth the risk just to save some cash or look good.

Fair enough regarding the motorcross boots though.

Thanks for sharing your experience. These look really decent, how is the protection at the front of the boot - is it very flexible/stiff?

I'm using Alpinestar smx plus (£190 on offer)at the mo and they are very good, feel nice on and look as if they offer very good protection which you'd expect to come to the fore in an off.

Having said that my 70 quid Diadora have lasted well and been very comfortable but I'm quessing wouldn't offer the same level of protection in an off.

Thumbs Up

Still stiff after wearing them 5 days a week all year. Although I can walk around for an hour or two without discomfort. They feel very solid and I think they'd hold up well in an off. Still waterproof as well. I did have to have a little bit of stitching done on one a few weeks ago as it started to split, the guy did it for free as I was having a few keys cut anyway. And as good as new.

There's no problem with MX boots on the road, they tend to be a bit stiffer and take longer to break in than road boots, but that's OK.

I wear Sidi Trial Zeros (also available in black)

https://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff426/zedheadchap/sidi_trial_zero_white.jpg

Or there's the Courier, which is a bit more waterproof

https://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff426/zedheadchap/3SidiCourier.jpg

I've also got a pair of A*SMX-6 road boots, or I did have, they broke after hardly any use and I'm swapping them for Sidis.

Sidi's [vortice/vortex - I forget which now] and Alpinestars SMX's I would say have been good boots in terms of 'what feels safe' - haven't crashed in either though Laughing [Trainers did a suprisingly good job that time Whistle]

However; they were unbearably noisey - squeaking, creaking and grinding everytime I walked anywhere, to the point it became irritating in garage forecourts and the like.

Currently using a pair of Black Brand boots from Ghostbikes. Might not offer the total brace-protection that some others do, but theyre waterproof, comfy, even for walking long distances, and damn cheap at sixty quid.

I wouldn't mind a braced pair of boots - I just found them all to be incredibly uncomfortable and inconvenient the minute you aren't riding. Beyond that i've just tended to go for whatevers cheapest/waterproof with basic protection.

I had some ghost bikes black boots. They were as well constructed as a jizz bunny sprocket weld and leaked like a seive after a few months

I got some sidi couriers. I don't like them. They don't have enough feel afaic. For me the trade off is more feel, less protection.

Also, I lost a buckle on them first time off road and they're five quid each for spares.

These look nice, is there some flex at the front of the boot since its not hard plastic like some other MTX style boots? Do you get a good feel for the gear pedal when riding?

I saw the Sidi B2's in the flesh earlier today for £225 at my local Honda dealership but unfortunately they didn't have my size, they look similar spec as the TCX S-R1's but I've only seen the TCX's on the net so far.

They also had the Alpinestars Supertech-R for £315 looks similar to the SMX but its more than I can afford at the moment.

Thanks for suggestions so far, I'm planning to go hanger lane to try on some different models soon.

I'm interested in an explanation of how high leg boots stop you breaking your foot?
I suspect someone wants some rufty tufty boots and see's this as a good excuse.

You don't need high leg Motorcross boots to protect you feet, any good strong leather boots will do that and mid high ones will also protect your ankles.

I'm with this guy. I know someone who had an off wearing high bike boots and was limping around afterwards. turned out, when the medics removed his boot, he had broken his leg just above the ankle. The boots held his leg in place well enough to enable him to walk.

I completely agree with you they work great as a splint. OP on the other hand wants something to protect the bones by his toes not his ankle or leg.

I've had the old version of the s-r1 for over 7 years done tens of thousands of miles (well over 50k, guess 85-90?), crashed in them a couple of times and they are still properly waterproof. The plastic work at the back can be a bit squeeky.

Oh and they also cause random small circle bold patches on my legs

Wow, this thread has exactly the same boots I had been considering a month ago with the exception of the motocross boots.

All I can add to the thread is that I read EVERY online review on the TCX, Sidi B2 and the alpinestars pictured above.

So here's what I took from all the reviews. It may help, it may not.

TCX....for protection of the ankle it's up their with the best of them. With the plastic protection being on the outside of the boot they seem susceptible to squeaking (described as "loudly"). I think this is because of the sliding parts in the heel get grit and road dirt producing friction. Many reviewers make use of silicone lubricant sprays. People also described this as a wide fitting boot.

Sidi B2....unbelievable comfort, many replaceable parts (toe and heal sliders). The majority of reviewers testify to the boots longevity of the boots (owning them from 2-5 years) although one downfall arose a few times and that was the softness of the sole which does give good-great grip but deteriorates quickly. I have found replacement soles for £18. This boot was described by the majority as a narrow boot.

Alpinestars.....the reviewers that took the time to review highly praised the boots for comfort, possibly more so than the sidi's but said their is less protection and their was a hung jury as to how waterproof they are. I will add however, most people that review in my experience do so not to praise a product but instead they bitch about it. Their was no real mention to width fitting.

On all boots the majority (aprox 75%) recommended a size bigger than your normal size but I found that my day to day shoe size was fine with the boot I eventually went with (Sidi B2 GTX). Why did I go for this boot?? Because I was able to get a pair for £160 on eBay. I wouldn't really describe the boot as narrow because I've always needed a wide fitting shoe and the sidi's fit with no pinching across the foot or heel with a normal cotton sock on.

Cheers,

Mark

I wear these.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SPADA-PREDATOR-WATERPROOF-MENS-WOMENS-MOTORCYCLE-MOTORBIKE-TOURING-BIKER-BOOTS-/191094164874?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Boots&var=&hash=item2c7e198d8a

Uncomfortable at first but once worn in they are nice to wear.
Never had sweaty feet in them, decent protection, very lightweight.
My pair was the same price but not from this seller.

Sorry late updating this, in the end went for the Dainese Torque RS Out D-WP. Thanks to all the posters.

The Sidi's came up tight for me but the Dianese were spot on, reinforced toe, slider and proper ankle protection, not to mention comfy, been wearing for a couple months now with no issues.

Shout out to OnYerBike in Buckinghamshire, great store they have up there I'd recommend a visit if you need quality gear.

True the most comfortable boots I have are A* SMX5. No issues with waterproof in the rain or winter so far.

I just replaced my B2's with a pair of SMX plus. I only went for the SMX as they cost me £70 via eBay.

The SMX don't feel as protective as the Sidi's but they are far lighter and more comfortable. Full credit to the Sidi's though, they lasted me 10 years! If money was no option I think my first choice would be the new Sidi Mag 1.
