Realise it's been done (to death) before but started a new one anyway.

So, currently riding a relatively old and high milage Aprilia and so far it's been ok reliability wise. However I don't trust it enough not to stop for an unknown reason at some point.

So, any suggestions?

I get mine with my Natwest Advantage Gold account. We get travel insurance, phone insurance and breakdown cover for both me and the misses the £10 a month.

They use Green flag who I have had out twice once for a flat tyre and once for a blown gasket. They took me to a garage of my choice withing 10 miles. Took a while to get to me the second time but on the whole not a bad experience.

I just go for cheapest, normally between AA and RAC, have no loyalties. About £60 a year or so, for me in any vehicle.

Worth having IMO.

Worth having, your bike may be reliable but if you get a flat tyre, someone tries to nick your bike and leaves it unstartable, etc. it will be useful.

Auto Aid.

You pay up front to a contractor, then claim it back. I like that, it puts you in charge of the recovery. No arguments at the roadside.[*]

£39 a year. Self and spouse. Vehicle is "a saloon car, hatchback, estate car, car derived van or motorcycle over 150 c.c's. Motorised caravans can be covered provided they are under 2.5 tons gross vehicle weight and with an engine capacity of no more than 2500 cc."

No age limit, just that it must be "properly maintained and serviced" and in a "safe and roadworthy condition" (before the breakdown anyway Wink )

Covers "mechanical or electrical breakdown (failures or breakages), flat batteries, punctures, lack of fuel, lost ignition keys or damage which is caused by an accident, vandalism or theft and results in you not being able to drive the vehicle"

That's pretty generous in what they cover. You may find accident damage in particular being explicitly excluded by other cover.

Clutch cable went on my Enfield, they sent a local recovery firm out. One call, text updates, good careful recovery, claim went through with no hassle[*].

[*] Except that the van monkey didn't (or said he didn't have) card payment facilities, when the Auto Aid phone monkey said he would. No drama, it was a town centre. Not so great if you're being recovered from Outer Ruralshire to Hicksville South though, so if you don't have cash, be very, very clear on the phone.

All my vehicles are covered by the RAC.
Breakdown, roadside, home start and recovery
(Technically it's me and the wife that's covered not the vehicles)
our 2 cars, my van and bike and any other 'domestic' vehicle we are travelling in.
I had a renewal of £160 quid this year so I rang them threatening a flounce and got the same
cover for £90 instead. Much more like it. Been with them since 2008 and only used them twice after
a cambelt failure in my van. Once to get it home and once to transport the van from my home to my mechanic.

As Baffler say's circa £25 for a year, why would you not have at least this, just in case you've just had a falling out with Dad/GF or Mate with the van is in Spain/out on the sauce etc.....

Used once with no hassle. Got my £100 or so within 2 weeks of recovery.

RAC personal cover, works on vehicles over ten years old, plenty of callouts should you find a vehicle in dire need of fettling, and works on any vehicle you are riding in, which is really handy when your miserly friend ignores the oil light and the "what's that vibration?" questions on the motorway until the engine really shits itself, leading to being stranded at the side of the road dressed in victorian era clothing with a small armoury in th eback of the car...

This is who I use, called them out a couple of times for 2 different bikes and been decent, only thing is once called out you need to keep proof of the issue being rectified (eg, battery replaced etc) as they'll charge if it's a repeat for the same thing

Now the 25 miles of home thing has been mentioned that remeinded me of my MCE related breakdown, I had breakdown cover as part of my insurance on my second GZ, and much paper proof of this. I broke a throttle cable trying to keep up with DAS bikes during training, conveniently within line of sight but about 4 miles of pushing the bike of my house. I phone the required number and the RAC showed pretty much straight away, I caught up with my instructor at the end of what became a lunch break and I thought that was that.

In november MCE phoned me trying to sell me additional breakdown cover. Apparently I wasn't covered for breakdown and they couldn't explain the extra I was paying on my premium. They wanted about a hundred pounds for breakdown cover for the remaining six months of my cover, and wouldn't let me spread the payments. When pushed on the conditions I was told 3 call-outs within 25 miles. I cant remember how much it would have been for nationwide cover, as I told the sales droid how much RAC membership would cost me, and he hung up when I asked how their resold RAC cover could possibly be better value.
