Ford Transit replacement key

Had a bit of an argument with work today, basically my van only has the spare key (someone before I got there lost the original), and I've been told if I lose it I'll have to pay for new locks.

My response was no, if I lose it I'll pay for a replacement key, the fact its the last key has nothing to do with me...

Question time: what's the deal with getting replacement keys for a mk7 Transit? Seems you need to take it to Ford or you need both keys to program a new one.

Another question: to get the serial number for the radio do you need to take the radio out? Some idiot changed the battery and locked the radio.

The code for the radio should be amongst the paperwork/user manuals that came with the van. Have you checked the glove compartment?

Not sure if its the same deal on a mK7 Tranny but

When I lost the only key to my old mK6, Ford wanted it brought to them on a recovery truck and £1000quid to fit new locks all round.

Ended up getting a mobile locksmith out who picked the lock, cut a new key from a blank in his van and programmed it from the van (combo of key turns in ignition to to program the transponder).

Cost me £250bung.

When that key wore down so much as to not open the door, I got a new one cut from Timpsons (locksmith chain) for £35quid, did the key turns in ignition thing myself and viola, one new key.

Dunno if its the same on a mK7 but maybe worth asking them.

I recently got a new Mercedes Vito key made (lost the one with the working central locking, leaving me wit a working transponder to start the van, but not to lock it on the button.)

Cost me £100 + Vat from Mercedes, which was cheaper than other places. Arrived next day pre-programmed, but they insisted I attend in the vehicle and they start it before handing it over - presumably to make sure I hadn't ordered one for a different vehicle that I was trying to steal.

If you have the van and the real key, you'll almost certainly find a locksmith in a caravan in a retail park carpark somewhere who'll have it done and dusted in the time it takes for you to buy and eat your sandwiches.

You can get a new key and have it programmed, or get a 'cloned' key with the transponder number matching the old one, probably cost around £50 on eBay, but you will need to send the old key or give them a visit

The cloned keys are junk. Ok if you use it every day, they charge from the transponder but don't last forever.
Put it in a drawer and 6 months later it won't work.

A ford dealer will want to change all the locks if you lose the key, it's the standard procedure.

A decent locksmith will be able to pick one of the locks and tell you the code to get the key cut, it will then need to be programmed.
You can also take out a lock, strip it and decode the lock cutting code by the discs which usually have the individual cut stamped onto it.

Best off getting a spare key now, save all the hassle.

If you are anywhere near bristol, Harris on 4d will do it at the cheapest price for genuine stuff. My van key supplied with 3 button remote, programmed was about £60.

If you pm me the serial number, as said, likely starts with a 'M' and 6 numbers, i'll give you the unlock code.

I replaced the key on my MK6 Fiesta myself

I did it because I wanted a flip style key from a Mondeo.

I bought a second hand Mondeo Key for £25, a fiesta key blank for ~£3, I got it cut in Timpson for ~£5

I programmed it myself it was easy and didn't cost anything.

I had to turn the key on and off, several times in a certain order but it was easy.

Looking at the pictures i of the Mark 7 transit the key is the same as my original fiesta one so you could do the same.


I can't speak for the transit, but with my Fiesta which as the same key, you do not need to pay for someone to program it. it is a peice of piss to do.

On Mk1 and Mk2 Focus you can access the "programming mode" yourself.

You may need TWO programmed keys, my car only needs one.

You get the programmed key(s) and put them in the ignition, turn from position 0 to position 2 and back to 0, and do that 3 times without stopping, so on/off on/off on/off essentially in the space of a couple of seconds, and you'll hear a beep. This means the car is in programming mode. Turn the programmed key once more to position 2 then remove and take the non-programmed keys and put them in one at a time turning to position 2.

Once done all keys (or rather the transponder in them) should be programmed to turn off the immobiliser and allow the engine to start.


Position 0 - steering lock
Position 1 - electrics on (radio)
Position 2 - ignition on
Position 3 - starter engaged



I don't know if this will work on the Transit Mk7, but some/most other Ford vehicles from the same time have similar programming modes.

Cost me a total of £40 inc P&P for a genuine Ford blank flip key including the remote fob (off ebay), getting it cut, then coding it myself.

my brother has a clever bit of kit to reprogram oem ford keys. Briliant thing, change the code of the key and then go down and get a non chipped key cut and swap the tangs over. Less than a tenner
