Hi folks,

I bought these for lifting my back wheel up slightly for maintenance. I am putting a new rear disc on due to current one being warped. I was going to throw them over my garage beams and do it that way. Will it work? Should I also use some sort of jack under the engine to be on the safe side? Bike has no centre stand. Bike is a Derbi Cross City 125 so light enough! Cheers!

in theory i would say yes. but will your beams hold the weight of your bike? what will you do to stabilize your bike from swinging once lifted? it could be lifted and once you put pressure on the wheel the bike could roll and fall on its side which you don't want.

personally i use an old plastic cargo box which i fill with water to add weight close the lid and use a wooden plank to ride the bike onto the box. but i have a 125cc which weighs 127kg so might be different for you

I was going to tie the bars down with straps as well. My beams will support it. It's not that heavy. I will have a go tomorrow! Cheers.

If you aren't used using them they can release suddenly if not careful, cheaper ones can just fail completely without warning.
Definitely best to have some kind of secondary support to stabilise it, and as above don't assume you can't break a roof beam and bring half the shed down!
You might spread the weight over more than one beam with some angle iron or something.
I wouldn't like to rely on the straps alone anyway, but in any case they were a good buy - they are useful to have around, for example help to seat a tubeless tyre bead with them.

Undo all the bolts to get the wheel out before you sling it up, easier on the floor.

something else i just remembered is if you have the nuts and bolts for your chain adjusters / wheel alignment i usually wrap tape around them before i take the wheel off that way there is more chance that they stay where they are and makes life easier once putting wheel back on.
i would still check alignment after just to be sure Smile

Half a bike shouldn't weigh much - if your beams are going to collapse, you probably need new beams anyway Smile.

I wouldn't bother using the ratchet bit; just attach straps and lift bike on to it.

You can get a motorcross stand for not much more than you paid for those straps, or a milk crate or similar should do it too.

:err:

Attach the straps to your joist.
Either leaving the hooks hanging down, making a loop or similar.
Lift the back of the bike into the hanging bits and attach.

I'd still just get a cheap mx stand or a milk crate etc however.
