Anyone fancy a couple of new RG 500s £55,000 and the reserves still not met Shocked good investment for a pension I suppose as long as you're not tempted to use them https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-RG-500-X-2-Both-Brand-New-Never-Started-Both-Blue-White-/331311773114?#description

Thought #1: Absolutely ridiculous. They were awesome bikes in their day, and definitely deserve their place in motorcycling history, but that's daft. They're still only a production motorcycle at the end of the day. Bored rich folks eh? Rolling Eyes

Thought #2: Meh, why not buy both and use just one of them. Then unused ones will be even rarer, and the price will soar accordingly Wink

Never started? In which case, they might not even run. Pointless waste of money. Only person likely to buy them will have them as museum pieces - doubt they'll ever get ridden. They were fun bikes but they weren't all that. 350LCs I would say were just as enjoyable in their own way, if obviously less fast and furious.

Its automotive art collecting, nothing to do with bikes as they will probably never be ridden. The price looks steep, however given that an unmade bed with Tracy Emin's crusty-gusseted smalls strewn about sold for £2,200,000 recently I am not surprised....

Aren't two-stroke engines prone to degrading due to moisture getting in over time if they're not run?

Either way, nice pieces of machinery

I don't think these will be classics in the same way that an RC30 is or a Vincent Black Shadow. The prices of these are fuelled by men who can remember 500GP racing and riding road two strokes. Once all of these men are dead, the bikes won't be worth nearly as much. Paying that much for a zero miler is not an investment IMO, it's a waste.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I love seeing pristine RG500s, they are my favourite bike, but in the same breath it is criminal seeing them not being used. As for the price, well, as much as roadworthy ones are crazy prices these are just insane.
I had one and it was epic. I will have another one day as I miss it so bad even though it was many years ago since I last owned one.
Would be awesome to see some rich bloke buy them, recommission them and give them a damn good thrashing Laughing

A good point Marjay, but when and if is the question? When things are old and rare they can still be worthless, but I can't think of many examples of old stuff that rocketed in value to eventually fall away as demand shrinks again?

Also there are those that will never pay the inflated classic status prices now, as they can remember the same items being worth a fraction a decade or so ago and even being scrapped or chucked away. For some it goes against the grain to pay out for something they could have fell over for next to nowt once.

@ m3-paul: "RG500G 1986, superb condition. Recently restored. 570cc kit. Nikon pipes. Dream Machine paint job. Lots of new o.e. parts."

Paint looks like an original colour scheme. Yours for a mere £10,495. Ahem.

Sept issue of Practical Sportsbikes, classifieds.

I'll have two Laughing
I keep scouring classifieds for that elusive bargain. I will probably end up with an RG400 that I will turn in to a 570. At least the 400 has a fuel gauge - mine went through petrol (and 2t oil) rather rapidly Razz

And Stan actually says that although the RG400 is not as tunable and can't be taken out to as much cc's as the 500, he says that fitting a 470cc BB conversion with some light tuning and set up work, makes them quite a bit faster than the std 95bhp RG500.

RG400's seem to be cheaper and would be the way to go for an RG that you just want to use on the road and enjoy. In much the same way as a Z650 is cheaper, more available and better handling than a Z1/Z900, so it makes in many ways for a better bike to ride and enjoy.

p.s The quicker than a std V-max bit doesn't worry me one little bit either, as I've been reading up on them a bit lately and how easy it is to find another 25-30bhp, or with a 1300cc conversion 165bhp at the back wheel!
If I win big on a lotto scratch card, I'd be driving a V-max engine down to PDQ straightaway! Laughing
