In the last few days the CG (2001, electric start, bog standard) has started to cut out every now and then at traffic lights.

Always when in first gear, engine at tickover, clutch full in, rear brake on. The engine just cuts, no jerk etc as if it was stalling on the clutch.

Its a bit of a sod having to then flick to neutral, restart and get moving again.

Any ideas folks? Very Happy

Given that it didn't come with side stand from the factory, I doubt there is a cut out....

Next guess would be loose connection in the kill switch, assuming it came with one of those?

Do you do this because it is the only way it will restart, or is it habit? If it cuts out, you should be able to stay in gear, keep the clutch in and simply thumb the starter button.

Theres no kill switch

and it will only start in neutral after said stall. In normal situations it will start in gear.

Well, this morning it did it within minutes of starting out, yesterday it did it after about 10 minutes of riding (after about 3 hours stood)

So I guess cold/cool-ish. But i've not been on a long ride on it in a while

Colour and condition of your spark plug? Have you adjusted the idle mixture, and idle speed?

Amount of free play at the clutch lever?

I have to confess that I've not done anything to the mixture since I bought the bike, nor have I pulled the plug to have a look.

I did wonder whether it may be an issue with fuelling but that doesn't explain why I need to get it into neutral before I can restart...

When you say free play, I assume you mean easy movement before it "takes up the slack" and starts to pull the clutch? Very little indeed, I'll go give it a poke on my lunch break and report back though

It does sound on the face of it like electrical, but a fouled plug, slow idle or well off mixture is easy to diagnose and something you should be checking for anyway since it's so easy on that bike.

On my super old CG ('81 vintage) it will cut out when it's cold out when stopped. I just increase my idle speed a touch or just keep a small amount of revs on while stopped.

Have just thought if fuelling issue, choke isn't kept on is it?

I mention as had this once on lad's 125. Just cut out at roundabout after been riding for a little while. Found out choke was pulled out (on). May be of some use or unrelated, but at least then another possible eliminated.

Nope, choke is only ever on for a short while while warming up and I get my lid & gloves on

ETA: free play in clutch lever about 15mm at lever end

I'd liken it more to the ignition being turned off than a stall.

No idea about how long the plug has been on there, I've had the bike since March and not changed it.

I had the same, my battery needed replacing. Try a good charge up first.

Well, I gave it a damned good going over at the weekend and dealt with a number of other issues...

Found loose battery connection, did it up again good and proper and pulled the plug for a look - judging by the plug colour shes a little bit rich but not excessively so. I used a standard socket to get the plug in and out, as none of my plug sockets would fit, so I've ordered the correct one and will have a play with the mixture when I get it.

Did a decent length ride afterwards and got her nice and hot, no problems at all until I was nearly home and she did the same thing again, cut out in at the lights - also the clutch started squealing like a pig and cutting in hard, rather than progressively (I think I've sorted that issue with clutch adjustment at the lever end though)
