FLIP UP PLATES

These flip up number plate brackets, will it fit my VFR400? I'm going to the London show later this month and i'll pick one up there if i can, any body know how they work? How much they are? If they affect rear indicator mounting etc? cheers

Wouldnt exaclty be hard to make yourself...although you may screw the back of your bike up if you make a mistake

I used to have plate spinner thing, it was an power valve motor with the plate on the end of it. It was mounted under the pillion seat in front of the rear light and had a switch on the end of a long wire to spin it.

Looked a lot more normal the plate flippers, unless you looked closely or under the pillion seat it looked pretty much normal.

I am now in posession of it, haven't actually got round to using it yet though tempted to put it on ebay and see what it goes for. High;y doubt you will find one at a bike show either.

They will fit anything pal, take a while to do a nice job though. I expect the constabulary would hold a pretty dim view of it, and give you a ticket in lieu!
It's probably one of these things that is'nt illegal unless you are actually (seen) using it?

I can't see that the device is illegal, just using it on the road, there are plenty of legitimate uses, such as, switching over to "show plates" at a show, or photo session, track use etc.

I don't think you'd be very likely to manage to get away with a plate flipper claiming it was for shows or track use. They could ask for proof of either of those and you'd most likely be quite fucked then, and they'd just notice your illegal exhaust, race can, the speed and everything else they can do you for.

The ones which mount under the seat are good as you can't see that it's there unless you remove the seat and it just looks normal until you spin it. Get caught with any of them especially if they've seen you use it and you've fucked.

If you cant find one to buy anywhere, make one yourself, mate of mine made one with a doorhinge and an old servo, hes using it on a marsbar sized numberplate though, not sure about how well it would work with standard size plates.

My dad's mate used to have a ZXR400 with a plate that flipped up when he pulled it onto full throttle. Not 100% how it worked but I was younger and I was amazed.

I would imagine they would charge you with attempting to pervert the course of justice, if they class it the same as those number plate white out devices.

I'd rather it was just a switch rather than connected to when you did something like full throttle.

If you wanted to be very cleaver, you'd hook one up to a GPS listing of all fixed spot gatsos in the country and to a radar & laser detector. When you're coming up to a gatso or it detects something spin your plate (if you have it switched on, also have an override switch). Smile

Easy to do...

Cut ur current number plate in half
Hing from BEHIND
Connect a high torque RC servo up to the back of it
Set it up so when the switch is pressed, the number plate is folded in half
and youre done

Or theres the other alternitive where you dont cut it, and you set the servo up so it lifts ur number plate up so its against the rear undertray facing down...

Just had an idea.
Dunno how possible this would be...

If you can fit some kind of LCD film over the numberplate.
Then get it to blank out different parts of the numberplate at a time.
If you could get this going fast enough (25 frames per second), then it would look normal to anyone looking at the plate.

But if a camara snapped it, you would only get a partial image of the plate. Maybe like only one digit displayed at once.

Won't stop you getting nicked by the Police if they chase you down, but could work against the evil camara's..
But may just be too complicated to put into practice tbh :/

If you get caught with one for, lets say speeding, they will throw the book at you for that offence if they notice a plate flipper.

Anyone remember the guy that filmed himself doing 165mph in the Brecon Beacons, and the police pulled him and saw the flipper? The copper told the court he had a flipper and he got a 12 month sentence Neutral

It is a serious offence the best thing like I said earlier is to use it in the case of speed camera's.
