I turn the tap ON, then to RES and then I find the petrol station.
I hate pushing motorcycles, especially those with low clip-on handlebars. Everytime I had to push a motorcycle, it was 30°C+ in the shade and I had my full gear on. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Had it as long as about half a litre left before. Usually fill up at around 120 miles, or before a longer jaunt if I know I'll be out for an extended period of time. ____________________ My Flickr |

Took the work van (diesel) to the point of running out, think it had 5 miles range, the dash started bleeping at me so I thought it was time to fill up ____________________ Yamaha MT-03 '08 (crashed)

Got a 9 litre tank, once squeezed 8.6 litres in. I ran out of fuel on the way home, put it on reserve, got home. Got bike out in the morning, commuted to work, filled up as I left work. Completely forgot I was on reserve. ____________________ Current:1991 Honda MT50 (Soon to be a H100/MTX/MT5 hybrid), 1976 Honda Cub C70, 2005 Honda Varadero 125, 1993 Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro , 2010 Road Legal Stomp YX140, 1994 Honda CRM 250 MK III, 1999 Cagiva Mito 125, 1992 Honda CB400 Super Four, Stomp T4 230, 1984 Honda H100s, 2009 Sym XS125K

Going by the hornet theory of 100miles I tank, I thought i had 7 left, so filled up... only got 8.37 in. So with a reserve of 3L and tank of 16L, I had a good 5L left in there. So one can only deduce that I ride like a pussy
Still haven't managed to rrun it down to reserve yet so I know exactly how much I can squeeze out of it... I must do that. ____________________ Triumph Street Triple-R

I have a petrol station at each end of my commute and get 200 miles out of a tank anyway and don't fancy having to push my bike in full commuting gear so don't tend to push my luck.
That said, I waited until the warning light came on once and comparing my receipt to tank volume still had 3litres left so it's pretty pessimistic. ____________________ Bikers make great organ donors - add your name to the register

It's not hard to work out your reserve range on a bike that has a reserve tap. Just fill up as soon as you hit reserve and note how much fuel goes in. Divide the miles you've done from full by the litres you put in for miles per litre. Now subtract the litres you put in from the tank's capacity less half a litre (for safety/failing to brim the tank) to get your reserve capacity and multiply that by the result from the first calculation. That's how many miles you can do on reserve.
My Bandit has a 5 litre reserve and will normally do between 50 and 60 miles on it on my commute. It'd go further if it wasn't all heavy/city traffic. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

My scooter takes 9.05 litres, and I regularly fill up with 8.6, 8.7 litres. You can tell when it's really low because it bogs down on acceleration - what's left of the fuel sloshes to the rear of the tank, away from the pump.
I've run out exactly once, when I got trapped in traffic in Westminster earlier this year. (If you follow RoyalJordanian on YT, it was the same day that he gave up and headed back home.) Not many petrol stations in Westminster, and I had a 7 minute push to a station when I ran short.
My VFR allegedly has a 22 litre tank, but when the last unit on the fuel gauge first starts flashing, it can only take about 16 litres. Either the gauge is lying to me, or the tank is smaller than advertised, or the tank needs very specific conditions for refilling, like being on the centrestand. I haven't tested it significantly. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4
