Hi,

I want to get into motorcycling but am not sure which path to take. I took my CBT when I was 16 to ride a 50cc moped to college and at 18 passes my car test. Now at 23 I want to get a motorbike but can't decide whether to get a 125 and gain some geared bike time or just go for a full DAS course like this https://www.lets-ride.co.uk/category-a-full-motorcycle-licence

Do I need a lot of time to get used to a geared bike, or will the training between CBT on a 125 and the full A test be enough?

Thanks!

You've got 5 years experience of driving a car, so much of your roadcraft is already in place, giving you the chance to concentrate on learning bike gears.

If I were in your position I'd go straight for your DAS. It doesn't take long to get used to the gears and you can do it in a few days enough to get to your test standard. I think getting a 125 would be a waste of time.

If you want, why not do your CBT first on a geared bike, and see how you get to grips with it. That might help you make up your mind before you commit to a DAS course if you're not ready, or waste money on a 125 when actually you found it pretty easy to do.

Ok so it seems to make sense to do my CBT sometime in the future then I can do my DAS after that if I feel like it when I turn 24 in February.

Now which bike to get .... I like the look of the Yamaha XJ6 diversion or the Suzuki SV600. Looking for a good looking commuter type bike.

Straight for DAS, I did, don't regret it. Being on a125 for any period of time might have killed my enthusiasm for biking.

Straight DAS, the other half mastered gears during the CBT session and she had never been on a bike before.

You have ridden a moped and have car experience, 125 would be a waste of time

DAS is verboten!

Well, full A anyway, until you hit 24. You can only do A2 (up to 35kW) at the moment, and even if you do, you'll have to do the A tests anyway when you hit 24 to get on a moar powah bike.

So depending how close you are, you might want to skip one tranche of tests and just slum it on a tiddler until you hit 24. They can be fun, it's a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Oooh! You should have shared this predicament earlier...
If 125 is ultimately the route, get something. Big and pokey like a varadero 125 XL
Plenty capable and hold their value really well

Keep saving till your 24 then do your full test.

Get your experience, without L plates, on a bike with enough power to get you out of other peoples way Smile

With those requirements I went and bought a ZZR600!
