How long does take it take to do the valve clearance on a Bandit 600?

The reason for asking is, that I've been given two quotes by two different mechanics. One saying it'll take 4hours (at £40/hour) and the other say it will only take 1 hour (£30/hour).

That's quite a difference in time, so is one taking me for a ride by claiming it'll take 4hours? Or is the mechanic who said it'll only take him an hour underestimated the work needed doing?

have a go your self, it really is piece of piss

the rocker gasket is rubber so you just reuse it, set of feeler guages 10mm ring spanner, long nose pliers (to adjust valve) an some sockets

done - an i rate my self just slightly higher in mechanical competence than jizzbunny

a few hours to do your self

whip tank off

plugs out, rocker off thats it

Valve clearances on a Bandit 6 are insanely easy to do. No shims required, just patience, feeler gauges, spanners and a thin bladed screwdriver.

But for £30 I will only be without a bike for an hour rather than a whole day/possibly weekend Smile
+ I'm no longer at my mums, so I don't have a garage to work in.

Vale Onslow, the mechanics a sound guy (Mick) and it's looking like that they don't try and overcharge you either.

and a bit longer if it's still got the PAIR system fitted as it's a Mk2. It's an 8mm ring spanner you need for the locknut not a 10mm btw.

It took me maybe 2-3 hours to get one of the cam cover bolts out on one 600 I owned. If the guy says he can do Bandit valve clearances in an hour at £30/hr, get him to do it for a fixed price and win win win.

Just make sure to be clear on whether their prices are to check the clearances or check&adjust.

Hi

It is not a hard job, but more than an hours work. 4 hours sounds a bit long.

Disconnect and remove tank, remove rocker cover (swearing loudly if you find the previous owner has stripped the thread for one of the bolts), set the engine to the appropriate position and check the valves for 2 cylinders (ie, exhaust on one and inlet on another), turn crank half a turn and repeat, etc.

Problem comes with the oddities. Can't remember on the 600 but at least once I have had to remove the coils on a Bandit to get the rocket cover off (and the thread in the frame for the bolt holding the coil on is weak). And getting the cover off from under the throttle cables can be a pig. Rocker cover gasket is reusable but locating it can take a few attempts.

All the best

Keith

Not much difference between check and adjust when you have screw & locknut valves JM.
Keith, yeah the coils have to come off to get the rocker cover off if you want to have any knuckles left. PAIR system too on the mk2 but you can block them off quite easily.
