black looks cool but I prefer either bright green

Anything other than a Street Triple is boring, this one just looks better minus the headlight. Laughing

I've got an 06 Z1000 (was "candy plasma blue", now red & black thanks to a stupid driver's insurance company). I've put just shy of 40k miles on it since brand new. I love it, will have it until it dies Thumbs Up

Executive summary:
It's built to a comparatively low budget, you get what you pay for in terms of finish & quality. It accelerates fast as f**k and is a huge amount of fun to ride (but understand where it needs your full attention). I use it for camping/touring, fun & fast rides, and daily commuting (~40 mile round trip).

Details:

Suspension - feels pretty agricultural and unsophisticated. Sure they claim it's all adjustable but either I'm completely hopeless at noticing the difference or the difference is negligible. Have read about people putting ZX9 front-ends on them, but I find that I know it's limitations and where & when to push it.

Tyres - I generally go with Bridgestones (BT016 or similar I think). As I said above, plenty of instant power so if you're clumsy/over-keen with the throttle it'll eat soft-ish tyres in well under 3k miles. Have tried other brands of tyre, found them to have similar life. Keep the throttle smooth and they last much longer.

Touring/camping - I've loaded it up with soft luggage many times and it's been fine. If anything, it seems to like the extra weight on the back. Plenty of places to secure bungies.

Pillions - it's quite a vibey/buzzy bike, no rubbers on pillion foot pegs, so generally get complaints about numb feet and/or arse from pillions. Also only has a soft strap at the front of the seat rather than proper grab handles.

Other - I found the original clutch really heavy. Would have liked a hydraulic clutch rather than a cable but it's down to costs again. Paint is coming off the engine so mine looks quite shabby. Not sure if I'll do anything about it though. Also, ditch original pipes + cat and get something a bit more manly sounding Thumbs Up

Thanks, this is great info as I'm thinking about the SX next March.

One question which is a bit more info around girlfriend going pillion, especially as I like to do the occasional trip to France. Could a pillion do 500 miles in a day on one of these?

Also, is there anything that can be done for a pillion to make their ride a little better?

Corbin pillion seat maybe, not sure if they do one for SX though.

No idea about the SX, might be completely different, but 500 miles a day for a pillion on my Z1000 will be uncomfortable enough to make your trip miserable via moaning and having to constantly stop in the name of comfort/numbness. Even as the rider, doing 3-400 miles a day for 3-4 days can be pretty bit hard on your bum...but the journey & company usually makes it more tolerable.

It's just quite a buzzy bike. Possibly something to do with the engine being part of the frame (I think it's refered to as a "stressed member" which is an entertaining phrase Smile ).

You could get rubbers for the pillion foot-pegs. I'd definitely look into alternative seats if you're planning on many long trips. The stock seats are both pretty thin, am sure you could do better.

I've got an orange 2003 Z1000 and love it. Had it 3 years now and only recently had a problem. It kept cutting out after about an hour or so of riding. I have since fitted a new fuel pump(well an ebay copy of the pump) and it seems to have fixed it. Other than that I have not had a problem.

It looks fantastic and always gets people looking at it when parked up. I don't think you will regret it if you get one.

Oh yeah, I never mentioned reliability Rolling Eyes

From my own experience, other than the alarm running the battery down when it's off the road (my own fault for not putting it on the charger - we're talking months) plus a replacement clutch cable, I've never had any problems at all...and I'm not an obsessive bike maintenance nut by any measure Wink I may be 20k miles overdue for a major service and managed to run it on about half the required oil in it for more than a month Sick but it's still never let me down. It does have the right amount of oil in it now and I have plans to replace the original air filter some time before next year though Thumbs Up

Other than brake pads and tyres, it's never had any MOT failures either. This is sounding likes a sales add...sorry.

My mate (preludedragon on here, but not posted in years) has an orange 04 or 05 with a power commander and various suspension mods has had occasional oil flow problems so, as always, your mileage may vary.
