So, I have been riding for about a month now, and still loving it. (although the itch to crack on and do my test is getting worse every day)

Just wanted to see if anyone else has had the same problem as me when going from car driving to bike riding. I am finally there with it now, but did anyone else take way too long to get used to turning the bloody indicators off.

So frustrating, and not to mention dangerous, but I cant be the only one to have had this problem?

Been there, done that. It was my single biggest problem as a
born-again biker. I found it was less of a problem at night because
I could easily see the green indicator light in the 'clocks'.

Work hard to get rid of this dangerous habit as quickly as possible.
I got there eventually.

Don't worry, everybody does it.
Bit of practice and it'll become second nature.

You'll get used to it, hopefully before someone pulls out on you because they think you are turning left.

My first bike (Yamaha XJ600) had self-cancelling indicators... would cancel after about 400m or 40s from memory.

Mr. Green

I've rarely forgotten to cancel a hand signal.

I am convinced that BMW 3 button self cancelling indicators were specifically designed as a eugenics test to weed out the fat thumbed and slow minded. First you play the "which thumb, what level, oops, horn, dammit, cancelled them..." game, then they auto-cancel at the precise instant that you actually begin the turn that you were signalling.

Fun loving Germans, eh?

You can fit a buzzer to the output of the indicator relay, and wire the earth side through the contacts of a NC relay which is activated by the brake lamp circuit.

That way, it doesn't buzz whilst you are waiting to turn at junctions with the brakes on (annoying) but starts when you move off.

Early on, I got into the habit of pressing the cancel button whenever I'm passing a junction.

After a few months it becomes a habit - I'll often be sat at traffic lights, indicator on, and the habit will kick in and I'll cancel the indicator, only to realise I haven't actually pulled away yet so i have to flick it back on Laughing Confused

I just hit the button every now and again to make sure the indicator isn't on. If you get in the habit of just pressing it now and then, you'll be fine.

As others have said, if you press it every time you pass a junction or something like that, it will quickly become a habit.

"David, indicators" was the most used phrase on my CBT.

Had my licence 2 years and keep finding I've left them on.

FWIW my old GT550 has self cancelling indicators.
Cancels after a distance has been travelled.
Some found them a pain, I rather liked.

Only hassle is coming off motorway. Put on at 3 stripped distance sign, had to put back on again just before 1 strip distance sign and then if turning left at top of slip road.

The previous owner of mine wired buzzers in and it is very helpful.

Glad I am not the only one then.

Yeah, I am trying to get in the habit of just pressing it after every junction.

Thank you for all the comments Smile

I just repeatedly, randomly press the indicator button to cancel it, almost 2nd nature now, in fact I think I have RSI in the thumb (from nothing else but canceling the indicators of course....)

I found that I forgot occasionally on my cbt. I forgot occasionally when I rode my 125 on my own. But as soon as I got on a bigger bike, I never forgot. Weird eh? Confused

That is brilliant and I am looking to get 800ST, and I have to say this is the main selling point for me, cannot stress how many times I am forgetting my indicators, language aside I think I love Germans Embarassed

My yamaha has self canceling indicators made from glorious 80s technology. They are supposed to cancel after 150m or 15 seconds as long as the bike is moving. I find they cancel at inconvenient moments, particularly on many lane motorways whilst negotiating junctions that involve several lanes splitting off or merging.

I note Honda is currently making much noise about such devices as a premium feature. Are they super intelligent non-annoying indicators or are Honda late to the party?

I just button bash the cancel button as i'm riding along.

I don't even look down to check, I just hit the cancel button periodically.

If you culture a bit of paranoia about leaving them on, then you'll perhaps get into a habit of hitting the cancel button on a fairly consistent basis.

Given you are used to the roads. Then switching them off should not be a issue.

People that fail to turn them off clearly are not concentrating enough on their riding.

Or it is just possible that you are concentrating enough on traffic, pedestrians, weather, road surface, etc., and you simply forget to cancel the indicators!
