Edit ignore all this, down to the bottom please for firewall speed issues!

Right I bought one of those HP Proliant Servers posted in here and am trying to set it up.

I want it to access as an FTP server from outside my lan and access the 2 storage drives in the Server as network drives on my other devices.

FTP

I have set up the server with a static IP, I have also forwarded the ports on the router and allowed them through the firewall.

I tried setting up the built in FTP on windows server but it was above my head. If anyone can advise me on that I would be grateful. I installed the components but I couldn't work out how to set it up. I'm hoping to connect through my external IP and the port is routed to the local IP of the server.

I also tried filezilla I think I set it up correctly when I connect the log seems to think it is fine but the device times out and won't show the drive.

Log below.

First of all, presumably you are on a dynamic IP from your provider, not static?
If so I believe you'll have to set up dynamic DNS.

Have you tested from outside?

That is coming from your internal address, put your external IP into https://ping.eu/port-chk/ and port 21

Does it say its showing as open and listening?

I'm not on a static IP, but it doesn't change if that makes sense. Over the last few years it's changed only once or twice I think despite many modem reboots. So I'm quite happy with treating it as static. I used to have FileZilla set up on my desktop for months with no issues. I'd like to use the built in windows options if possible but it is above my head!

As an aside I've mapped 2 drives in the server as network drives on my desktop, the transfer seems slower than I'd though at about 3Mbps it also takes 'my computer' a long time to open (I assume from trying to resolve the drives) any tips on what I should be looking at?

FTP why not sFTP?

Can't say specifically for 2012 but for 2008 it's in server features/roles etc accessed via Server Manager.

Why sFTP not FTP?

I know where the options for it are, I just can't get it working it is over my head.

sFTP is secure, it uses ssh so traffic is encrypted.

Ftp is not everything is sent in plain text, password an all

I'm not overly bother tbh it isn't anything remote sensitive.

Does this look right to you?

I thought the speed should be about double that,

It fluctuates between 1MB/s and 6MB/s the throughput fluctuates between 60mbps and 100mbps and if I stop the transfer it drops to nothing - kbs.

Shouldn't the speed be faster with that kind of throughput? MB/mb is give or take 1/10 right so the speeds should be closer to 5-10MB/s?

Yep, I'm a dick who didn't look properly.

Now I don't know why you have an issue, does the port ping from an external location when the firewall's on?

I turned it off and on again and it worked Laughing

I still have my question about the speed though!

is all your hardware gigabit? every switch/router/hub and cat6 cable?

personally, i have my pc/server/media centre all into a gigabit switch, which is then connected to the shitty adsl router I got for free from ISP (which is good enough for me not to spend any money replacing)

Nope it's a powerline connection. I'd like gigabit but cable routing is too much agro.

My question is about the speed I have, 100mbps. If the Throughput 100mbps and if I end the transfer and the throughput drops to, to all intents and purposes 0. Shouldn't my speed be more than 6MB/s

A quick google says 100mbps = 12.2 MB/s it seems odd I get half of that.

Sounds about right, it 'thinks' it has a 100Mb connection until it tries to use it Laughing

I've got a powerline thing too, I love it, but it's certainly not as good when transferring large files compared to a traditional cable.

Actually, to see where the problem really is, remove the powerline and connect directly (even if it means moving your pc for an hour or so), if you still only get 6mb at least you can start looking elsewhere (disk speed/processor maxing out?)

lose the powershit connection.
get 1 long ethernet cable and run it round the edge of the rooms/stairs etc etc

once it's done, it's done.
