I am going to collect a bike tomorrow evening that is currently taxed until February 2015.
If I make sure that the v5 is dated for the 30th will the tax transfer to me or do I need to tax it online before I leave?
I realise that common sense and the dvla don't often mix.

Looks like you will be trialling that out for us all Laughing

New rules are from the 1st of October.

Because we still can't do change of keeper online[*], it'll be days before the DVLA will even know that it happened.

So you're good to then at least.

[*] It's "planned", but will they want to give up that sweet, sweet penalty notice racket?

I'm picking up a new van at the end of the week and was planning on just dating the V5 back to sept. It's a bit of a risk though as the guy might have picked up a speeding ticket ect.

How would you actually buy the tax legally though? Surely I can't tax it before I've picked it up and am actually the registered keeper which means I would have to drive home untaxed unless you can do it over the phone.

This is something I wondered.

I always tax online, but without the V5 in your name, how can you tax it until the DVLA update the registered keeper?

Unless the tax paid by the previous owner is valid and in place until the name on the V5 is transferred

The story (from a web Q&A) is that as of midnight tonigh, we can (and "should") phone or go online with the new keeper slip and buy new VED immediately, before they receive the change of keeper by snail mail.

So there will temporarily be two lots of VED on the same vehicle, mmm, money money money nom nom nom.

They totes promised not to flange it up and cancel the new keeper's VED when they later cancel and refund the old one. Rolling Eyes

This even after 01-10-14....

That is until they have a online system that allows you to change ownership at point of sale.

And so will be the case even after 01-10-14. As they will refund the old owner from the start of the next month and the new keeper will have to pay VED from the start of the previous month.....

If you can get to one. Not so if you're lucky to be in work and actually at work while they're open (e.g. 9 to 5 job)!

Know of many post offices open at quarter to ten in the evening?

All these people claiming their car is now untaxed and can't legally drive....

Did you not still have the ability to tax the car in the last few weeks since the reminder came through the post?

I've always taxed my car/bike within days of the reminder, and it keeps the 12 months from the date of the previous disc.

Don't really know much about this new system other than theres no disc and sold vehicles get taxed twice for the DVLA pocket monies

Absolutely Love how theyre throwing the term "Unprecedented" around, yeah I guess it was, but it sure as hell was not unpredictable.

It's cool, you're still in a more knowledgeable position than the DVLA. Laughing

That's nice. I pay muggers at the point when they cock the hammer and not an instant before.

If I'm gonna have to pay regardless, I'd rather pay sooner then its sorted, and gives me longer to sort out any problems caused by their fuckups.

Plus if I had VED money sat in my account for too long it'd probably get spent on something other than VED, then I'd be untaxed and I'm sure that wouldn't go down well with the popo.

I'm hoping to do that but only going back a couple of days, can't really see how they can prove the sale wasn't on the 30th if both parties agree.
After a point though if you're backdating it weeks or months they will probably try and fine you for not sending off the v5 or something.

And free fuel.

You'd be pretty safe, most "policing" is done by ANPR now.

Don't drive anything popular with chavs or dodgy diversities, don't stack it or get stopped by a live copper.

If you do, you're looking at perverting the course of justice, and a custodial sentence is the default.

It's a gambit for real gangtas and proper pikeys, not for anyone who intends to ever have a real job or mortgage.

After renewing the bikes tax yesterday, today I junked my brushed finished waterproof hexagon style holder.

The bike now feels so much more responsive and pops up in 4th easy now without that extra weight up front Razz.

Not to mention improved mpg.

I taxed on line just now (now much more streamlined). Taken the tax disc holder off too, it now does over 200mph with the new aerodynamics and weight saving.
