Right, so I thought today I would replace the front tyre and having watched numerous how-tos on youbtube and having done some reading it was a job I felt confident I could do.

No problem getting the old tyre off, one side of new tyre on, inner tube in and other side of new tyre in, bit of a faff but seemed to go OK. Wouldn't inflate. turned out I'd ripped a hole in the inner tube.

So new inner tube and try again. This ones now not inflating and hissing so i assume I've done exactly the same thing. just too fucked off with it now and need the bike for Friday, so I'm going to have to ring round to see if there is anyone who is going to be able to do it tomorrow, from past experience i doubt it.

Try putting some air in the tube before putting in, or just after. Before you get the levers on the tyre.
Helps get it away from your levers and the edge on the tyre....

Herp de derp. Razz

It's some type of black magic, with enough practice you'll master it. That or your failed attempts at black magic will have caused the deaths of many small fluffy kittens!

As everyone has already said, inflating the tube a bit is very important for getting the tyre on without causing a pinch puncture. Lube the tyre up with washing up liquid as this will make it easier to get onto the rim.

If all else fails, breakdown cover is very useful as if you've got a puncture they'll be happy to take you to a shop/workshop who'll be able to fix it. Wink

thanks Clanger

a quick thought.... the first inner tube now has about 14 patches on (I may have missed one, or double counted one) and there are still pinprick holes.... if I was to bung a can of the liquid puncture repair stuff for pushbikes in is that likely to be OK?

Thats assuming I can get the bastard thing back in without ripping it a new one again...

I always treat a patch as a get me home bodge and replace the tube ASAP. 14 patches are 14 disasters waiting to happen IMHO.

Did you partially inflate the new innertube?
A bit of pressure helps prevent pinch flats. Sometimes a little lube (which doesn't eat the rubber, of course), can help too. Tyre soap is ideal of course, when not available, I've used a bit of normal soap lathered up. Washing up liquid as Ste suggested, seems reasonable, though I've not tried it.

Also, make sure that as you're getting the final bit of tyre in, that you've got the opposite side pushed in to the dip in the rim - makes it massively harder if you don't.

Finally, make sure your tyre levers don't stick too far through.

Personally I would fix all the holes first, but yes, a slime thingy might do it.

This is why you should never use a kitchen fork as a tyre lever Very Happy

The old adage about not being able to make omelettes without cracking a few eggs comes to mind. Consider that patched tube a practice run, with any luck you'll do the next one without any patches. Wink

I'm sure I've ridden bikes with similar and it's been fine - providing the patches themselves are done ok, it shouldn't be a problem.
