PostPosted: 16:43 - 08 Nov 2014    Post subject: I crashed... Reply with quote

About 40 minutes ago I was riding out in the rain and I came into a corner and there was mud I didn't see, I lost traction and slid into the verge, I came off the bike and rolled to a comfy landing on the wet grass. The bike scrapped along the verge and came to rest a few feet away, I was only going about 20 into the corner. The mirror came off, indicator bent, gear lever bent into the stand so was a bitch to put into gear, the foot peg is also bent. The bike is a CBR 125R for those who are interested. I have to say I was dreading the push home uphill In the rain, but after some stomping on the gear changer I got it into second and rode home like a champ. I'm not even annoyed that I crashed, I just wish it wasn't broken so I could ride more. I only passed my CBT about a month ago and I've only been riding the bike properly since Wednesday so I'm pretty pleased that my accident was so tame.

Oh and if you want pictures of the bike just ask Smile

I'd be spending some time working out why I crashed if I were you. Were there manhole covers on the corner? Was there diesel?

There was some mud left from a tractor or something I didn't notice, and I braked through it, lost traction and skidred .

No crappy paint diagram?

Out of interest, are you new to the roads or just to bikes?

Thats a bitch. I came off about a month after getting my bike. Going round a corner in the wet, not manhole covers or anything, I just found the shitty OEM tyres limit I think. I replaced both tyres shortly after, but it knocked my confidence for a while. Not much damage to the bike thankfully. Bent brake lever and footpeg and a broken indicator. Scraped the exhaust cover, mirrors, indicators and instrument panel. Live and learn.

Crappy paint diagrams are essential here, no diagram no crash Laughing

inexperience is a bitch, especially when you are on two wheels. I'm only 6 months in to using a bike on the road (having been on 4 wheels since 2002) and its definately a steep learning curve. When I was younger I crashed loads of scooters in fields though Laughing

At least you have an idea what went wrong, but what can you do to see that mud is likely before you actually hit it? what clues? Are there farmers fields around? been following a tractor? etc

well here ya go. The rainbow line represents me. Where the arrow ends is where I come off and the bike keeps going then stops. The black line is a pensioner who turned in after I crashed, I was was a little distracted by the car.

Crashed, shrugged it off, drew a crappy paint diagram. You will do well here.

Just try to learn how to spot these sorts of hazards, my first crash was about 2 months after passing my CBT, I was following my mate on his moped, I was on my MT5, I stopped paying attention to what I was doing because I thought I saw someone I knew, and was going to wave or something, my mate braked for a roundabout, I didn't put the brakes on, front wheel locked, I started to slide towards the back of him, I turned to avoid him, locked wheel slid out underneath me. Snapped the clutch lever perch. Pushed it home 3 miles. I would have just rode without a clutch now, but at the time I didn't realise it was possible.

Haha thanks, that's pretty lame. I had some trouble at first starting the bike. It didn't wanna start Smile

Sounds like you and the bike came out relatively well, downside to this time of year is crap road surfaces.

Only thing's maybe think about when you brake going into corners, if that was a factor. You can get away with front and rear slides, but soon as you start throwing in braking things can go wrong.

Its now dark up here in fife so I'll get pics first thing tomorrow Thumbs Up

So essentially you fucked yourself and need to improve your survival reactions... dont use front brake on lose mud, gravel, oil or ice. Ive done it, panic braking hard in rain on a corner at 40mph Sad
The current weather is also washing lots of shit and gravel into the middle of each lane, especially on my commute Mad

What you should have done - no brakes, tip bike in, moar throttle, keeps bike up Thumbs Up

From one riding god to another, it seems.

Glad this kind of advice won't result in anyone being injured or killed. Oh wait...

For those of you who don't get it, you should maintain the throttle position and not chop it shut, you are technically supposed to open the throttle very slowly through a corner, but this matters less on a bike whose tyres are pretty much the same width front and rear. You certainly shouldn't open the throttle a lot (implied by the word 'moar').

I have predominantly been using my rear brake and engine braking more haha, then I ease onto the front one Wink that was the same case with the braking up to the crash. There was no panic braking done by me haha, I just thought oh fuck and tried to lean out of it haha. Then when that didn't work I let go of the bike so I didn't get my leg squished Very Happy probably wasn't the best reaction to the situation and I probably could have done something differently to save me and the bike, but that's in the past now and all I can do is learn from my mistakes. Oh and my tyres are new and not bedded in yet so if I had leaned more the bike would have slid over Rolling Eyes

Fair play for posting your mishap on here for the gods to judge you.
By your own admission you made a mistake but more importantly, you lived to tell the tale.
Glad you're ok.
Buy new bits and carry on riding. Thumbs Up
