Done this at a roundabout once.
Had a brain fart of my own this morning. Just finished a night shift, got all my gear on ready for the ride home, put key in the ignition, hit the starter switch......nothing, dead as a dodo. Thinks to myself ahh, kill switch must be on...nope. Oh, I know, it must be in gear and won't start because the side stand' s down. Nope, not that either (been caught out by both of these scenarios before).
After much puzzlement, resigning myself to the fact that the bike is dead and wondering what to do, it dawns on me. Instead of just putting the key in the ignition, try actually turning it too.
In my defence, it had been the last of four long night shifts and I have man flu at the moment. ____________________ There ain't no devil, there's just god when he's drunk.

got to work, turned bike off, pulled key out - lights stayed on...hmmm
so im thinking "must be a bad connection" as they were still on after i fiddled with the switches etc - all fine
decided best thing to do was to snip the wires to the back lights an fix them during my lunch break, (as didnt have a screwy to disconnect the battery) snipped wires an posted on here
after about 6seconds of my post, someone mentioned i must have left the lights in the "park" position

Triumph RS Sprint. Did a service and some other work, took it down to a mates for a test ride. He's on a slight hill, so knocked it into first and left it on the sidestand. Had brew, came out, push starter, nothing Oh, of course, pull clutch in on these. Clutch in, press button, nada. Finally I twigged. These things will not start in gear. Not much help, the battery was flat as a fluke, mate grinning as he fetched the jump leads. Its a story he takes great pleasure in telling to all and sundry. ____________________ The CBR900RR has been sold. Aprilia Falco worms its way into my heart.

Accidentally, half way up a mountain in Cyprus, just coming out of a hairpin bend, not sure how I managed to hit the switch.
Ground to a halt thinking WTF, thought there'd been some major electrical fart, was about to get off and push it to the side of the road when I had a brainwave and carried on.

If I park my bike in town or on the street I habitually flick the killswitch as part of my "shutdown" routine. And check it as part of my "start up" routine before I ride off anyway...
Doesn't mean I haven't been caught out by it before... ____________________ NDB 19/10/1989 - 1/11/2010 |Nowhere.Elyseum wrote: I get the distinct feeling that Tim should be our secret weapon for future trolling. I don't know many people that can rip the piss in Iambic pentameter |

Easily and often done
On one of my old bikes, I eventually got round to connecting the killswitch up in an idle moment 'just in case i need it'
Sure enough, a day or so later I came out of a bike shop
and the fecker would spin but not start.
As usual, there always seems to be an audience at hand when you balls things up.
A few embarrasing minutes spent cranking, fiddling, checking for fuel etc
before I realised I'd knocked the killswitch to stop.

I did it once while I was learning for my DAS. I'd been told to go for the kill switch if I dropped the bike, so after messing up a U-turn and tipping myself into a hedge, I flicked it and instantly forgot about it. My instructor and riding mate helped me get out of the hedge, then got back on their bikes and rode away, leaving me wondering why my bike wouldn't start.
Also, in a previous life I worked in the motor trade. I took a Vauxhall VX220 to be cleaned, and self-importantly reminded the cleaners that to start it they would have to turn the ignition on then press the starter button. Then, in possibly one of my dimmest ever moments, I went to fetch the car, got in it, and wondered why it wouldn't turn over when I turned the key. The cleaners came over with a little smile and pointed at the starter button. |

Just after I got my 125 we were out somewhere and swapped bikes to have a whizz round the shopping centre car park. I always turned my bike off by the key, she always stopped it on the kill switch.
Took me a while to work out why mine wouldn't start! ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

I've never been caught out. Oh no. Absolutely never.
(at least not with any witnesses)
I'm sure I saw that one of the newly announced BMWs combined the kill switch with the starter, which seems like a good idea to prevent this kind of problem. Flick the switch backwards to kill, flick it back down for normal run mode, press further down to start. Never forget the kill switch again |

At Locksbottom years ago on the May Day run, I went on my 125 and parked up to watch all the bikes go off. When I went back to mine it wouldn't start at all and I got into a proper strop. I was fishing around in my pockets for my RAC card when my friend casually flipped the kill switch back again.

CB250RS, visited my sister and brother-in-law for the evening. They live at the bottom of a hill, and when I went to leave, the bike just wouldn't kick over. Pushed it up the hill countless times, thing stayed dead.

Nope, but I stopped to help a "broken down" CB500 a couple of months back, and we had the seat off and the fuses checked before the rider said "I don't understand it, it was running fine, I was just sitting at the lights and slapping the tank..."
Bad enough for me, but his missus had turned up by then. So many Man Points down the drain. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
