 |

Hi all,
My dependable Gs500 has developed what can be described as a hole in its frame its located in the link between the two pieces of the right hand lower frame and the left hand main bit. Its on the rear side just above where the exhausts go in to the engine and is about 1-2cm big.
This bit, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/98-Suzuki-GS500-GS-500-LOWER-RIGHT-FRAME-RAIL-/191047015678?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c7b4a1cfe
Now I am replacing this beast in the near future but unfortunately I use this work horse for the daily commute and its MOT is coming up in November. Is this something it will fail for? and am I putting my life in danger riding it? I have the money for a new bike but just need to find the time to go out and buy one! I don't really want to pour money in to this one needlessly
All of the examples of this part available on ebay seem to be from the US or as part of a whole frame. Has anyone replaced this part? I am guessing its an engine out thing?
Advice much appreciated. ____________________ "no I didn't steal it that's just the way I ride" |

Safe method, get a welder to weld a plate over it.

Would cover for MOT.
Is it just the frame rail itself or actually part of the frame. A GS500 is likely to be sitting in a scrappy somewhere with the right parts |

They're not supposed to remove anything, so a bit of tape around it etc should be fine for the MOT.
I should have one for sale, but it's 250 miles away and not sure when I'll next be back there, so probably best to just order one from the above .

It's the bit that crosses between the two parts of the frame. So the back if the horizontal bit above the pipes at the front of the engine in this picture https://wiki.gstwins.com/uploads/Upgrades/sliders_naked.jpg
The engine is still bolted in so it's not like it's going to fall off, and I am not Evel Kenevel. ____________________ "no I didn't steal it that's just the way I ride" |

I got around to replacing the offending part this weekend...

oops a bit worse than I originally thought, ordered a new bit off fleebay and this is how it looks now.

Just need to give it a clean and a new tyre and I should be good for the MOT as long as they don't notice the twisted sub frame and the slack chain . ____________________ "no I didn't steal it that's just the way I ride" |

Its a 11 year old bike and the only time its been inside is in the showroom, but yeah it was much worse than I thought it was. Once I took it off I poked at it and it crumbled...
There is lots of crap all over the front of the wheel and the exhaust bolts look more like rusty nails .There are two drainage holes just where the rust started, I guess they fill with crud and keep the moisture in and it rots. ____________________ "no I didn't steal it that's just the way I ride" |

a few points:
Looks like a good job you replaced it.
You're lucky it's a bolt in-bolt-out rail and not part of the frame
That hole is so big your engine could have fallen out when riding! ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

I ended up supporting the engine as I was not sure if the other bolts would support it on it's own so thought better safe than sorry. Looking at that picture I needn't have bothered!
I agree it was not safe to ride one minute it was a bit of bubbling paint then the next time I looked it had a hole. Before I took it off the hole was 1-2cm but it was eaten inside out so most of what you see in the picture when it was off was hidden by paint holding the crud together. Pretty worrying really I need to pay more attention to my bike . ____________________ "no I didn't steal it that's just the way I ride" |
