I'm about to move to a new home that can only be accessed by a rough, unpaved and muddy track that goes for several hundred yards through a wood and a ford before it reaches the house proper.

One problem I have had in the past is couriers refusing to go through the stream at the ford. The Royal Mail is generally okay, but the rest are a bit leery. Which is fair enough.

Ideally what I'd like is a large box, close to the road end of the track, in which delivery vans can leave stuff. However, a lot of my deliveries need to be signed for, which seems like it would defeat the object. Is there any way round the signature issue?

Ta.

Rubber stamp for signature? Would that work on the electronic pads?

Otherwise large box with padlock used by courier to lock works. Friends use a similar system.

Use a friend's address for deliveries.

I just get everything sent to work. That, um, works.

Used to do this too. Now self-employed, though frequently out of the house!

That's the default plan - I have family living a few miles away.

Get a wad of post-its, write a short signed declaration that you want the parcel left in the box. Some couriers take the note, others take a photo of the note. They've started doing this around here.

The company I work for uses TNT for deliveries,

They require a signed note to be able to leave an item in a 'safe' place so that the driver can take the note with them as proof he has followed instructions and not just dropped it over the fence if the customer kicks off.

Paradise!

Seems to me that what you need is a full-time Gatekeeper.
And I know just the man!

Of course, it goes without saying that I'm thinking

but I'm pretty sure that he'll be prepared to set his sights a little lower

for a taste of the high life and a piece of its attendant inaction.

When can I start?!!

How about these?

Signature probably hard to get by, but some couriers like DPD will let you tell them where to stash it if you aren't in.

Some petrol stations have a drop-box service that couriers use. They send you an email or sms when they have delivered something, and you reply with a code when you have collected it.

I have a similar problem with deliveries when I am at my place in Spain. The post office and local courier service have my phone number and call me when a delivery is due, and I have to go and meet them at the bar in the village.

You'd need a trail bike to get there.

That's one reason I bought my Defender hi cap. Cool

After the cloudburst on Thursday 6 November the ford was too deep for most vehicles the morning after. The Landy (which I was driving) would have done it, but a big openreach van was parked in the way on this side of the stream so I couldn't get past.

Still, the stream carries away excess water pretty quickly, so after half an hour, when the water had gone down a bit, the driver got all bullish and decided to cross. He would have made it, except he made the classic mistake of going through too quickly, making a big splashy bow wave that came over the bonnet. The van got halfway out on the other side before the engine stopped with a puff of smoke. Water in the engine, perhaps dropped a valve? So there it sat, Timberwolf chipper still on the trailer, while I walked past it up to the house.

I took this picture about an hour later on my way back, after the water had receded further. The van was gone the next day, I suspect on the back of another trailer.
