Since getting a new laptop and windows phone I've been using cloud storage. I would prefer to use my own storage though so have looked at NAS. Reading reviews about devices though it seems the data goes through the device mamufactureres server. Is this right? Or am I reading something wrong?

No that is wrong, unless maybe they are referring to the dynamic DNS functions?

Some offer cloud backup add-ons built in to the firmware, but no, that is not correct. Otherwise that would defeat the object, large storage on your own network accessible at high speed.

Thanks folks things are a bit clearer. I was looking at this.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-ShareCenter-Network-Storage-Enclosure/dp/B008HNRD4I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416164277&sr=8-1&keywords=D-Link+NAS

Ive got the old HD drive out of the defunct laptop and a Seagate 250g external drive which is basically just an HD drive with a usb adapter on it, so im assuming I could pop them into the above box.

Not looking in detail but I would expect it to use 3.3 inch drives not 2.5 inch laptop ones.

Why don't you just shoot yourself in the face?
It would be alot less mess.

Why the fuck are you going to buy a NAS only to chuck an old, slow, power hungry, small 250gb drive in there?

I guarantee that you will hate that NAS.
It will be slow, limited and annoying.

Read my other post in this thread.

Will also cost more to run in power bills and be less flexible in what it can do.

How much does that lot cost including shipping?
The cost of running it will be more than a proper microserver.

Open media vault is an operating system, own cloud is a plugin for it.

One of the biggest points of a Microserver is it only has 150W psu and it general use it will use less than a third of that dropping to virtually nothing at idle.
Although a microserver may appear more to buy initially these days they running costs are neglible and they are very reliable to run.

Got to agree with others in this thread, having gone from a NAS to a microserver, I've not looked back.

You can do so much more with a server, where doing stuff on a NAS is just a pain especially a d-Link one (mine's a d-link one)

NAS now is for backup only, still not set that up mind.

This looks like its going to be in the realms of more than fifty quid so unlikely to happen soon.

The other option is a cheap 2nd hand pc, running freeNAS. Then add your drives. Basically this will give you a network drive that you can access from all your pcs, laptops, tablets & phones. Plus it will serve as a bit torrent and itunes client. £20, plus your storage drive.

I think people have set up raspberry pi servers as well but I haven't even begun to play around with my RPi yet so don't have a clue what to expect down that route.

I'm not sure I want a dodgy old pc running while I'm out of the house.

And will cost a fair bit to keep powered up, and run.

For simple tasks, that are not really time critical nor do they require high throughput and resources they are decent.

But a server they do not make.

A pc with a 300w psu is hardly going to break the bank is it?
