Hi All,

winter time again and always I have had the issue of my hands freezing close to cracking off as I am doing 1 hour journey in morning and late evening every day when the weather is usually very cold.

My options as I see it are :
1.heated grip. don't want to do it as it will mess with the manufacture grip. As I understand I have to tear them and replace them with some cheap chinese ones .

2.glove guard . ugly so moved on .

3. proper gloves. I have spent £30 on my gloves . they are not brilliant but ok .

so looking at above I am inclined toward point 3 so in your view are there any gloves out there that is very good and doesn't cost silly amount for this winter ?

Especially my finger tips heart the most Smile

£30 on gloves is cheap, and as with most things in life... you get what you pay for.

Keep them for summer gloves and invest in some better gloves for winter, there are plenty of windproof/waterproof out there.

Make sure they ARE waterproof, cos no matter how much padding they have, wet hands = cold hands :/

Wear a fleece/hoody over your bike jacket then a water proof coat or suit on top. Your hands will be cold due to restricted blood circulation due to your body being cold.

I got a waterproof jacket off decathlon for about £7 so it doesn't need to be expensive.

For gloves the big two finger lobster style gloves are very good.

Heated gloves Thumbs Up

If you go the inner glove route then beware that they will add bulk and reduce feel but they heat the parts the grips simply can't (back of the hand/fingers).

I don't have problems with my body getting cold, I wear some Aldi base layers which are Crane brand merino wool, with a couple of light T-shirts and a medium sweater and haven't put the thermal liner in my jacket yet as I haven't felt cold yet.

I got fed up of cold wet hands to I invested in a pair of Knox zero2 gloves, they're fantastic completely waterproof and very warm with shit loads of protection. Bit pricey but should last years.

For gloves I swear by the 2 finger (or is it three) lobster style.
I found you can still get the Hein Gericke Pathan type from the HG German website. Ballpark £47 atm when converted from Euros including postage.

but other makes available.

If muffs aren't the answer, then you're asking the wrong question.

My £19.99 are great at keeping my hands warm....

You tend to finds its colder when dry..... But yes, wet hands are not good.

OP. End of the day if you want warm hands. Its either muffs or you walk and stick your hands in your pockets or drive in a nice warm car Thumbs Up

Last winter (and this, so far), a combination of Rukka three-finger lobster gloves (about £100) and Oxford Hot Grips heated grips (about £55) seem to be good enough for me. I still have the muffs I used before the heated grips and I'll put them back on if the weather turns Siberia-like for any length of time.

Be careful of the quality of the gloves. I tried Frank Thomas lobster gloves and they were utterly, completely useless. I think my summer gloves were warmer. They soaked up rain like a sponge.

The Gore-Tex Rukka ones cost more (like three or four times as much, if I remember correctly), but I'm on my second year with them and they are still warm and don't leak. It was money well spent.

I bought the following :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Warmawear-Heated-Motorcycle-Glove-Liners-Motorbike-Battery-Inner-Gloves-Thermal-/350977640506?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Gloves&var=&hash=item51b7e5c83a

it is ok but only barely keeps my hand warm , it does prevent it from freezing but barely warm .

it takes 6 aa batteries every 2 hours or so , thus quite expensive and not logical to continue.

I am going to return it .

my next options are heated grip or muff.

muff is a 100% no as I hate the look of it even if I freeze.

heated grip maybe .

My questions is , do you have to rip the current grips or would they slide out so in future you can place them back in if need be ?

I remember on some forum it was saying you have to cut it open.

now re brands, I am happy to get something good but not foolishly expensive . is oxford anygood for £70 ?

the main question is does it keep you warm?

You can get the oxford ones that wrap around your existing grips and velcro on, but they add alot of bulk.

Heated grips on their own don't really work, as the heat leaches away, the back of your hands and fingertips still get cold.

Muffs may look nasty. But they work, if you've ever used them you'll be a convert.

Other option is the proper heated motorcycle gloves by gerbing or keis.

Last winter i had a trip upto the lake districts, there was snow around up through yorkshire, but i was wearing summer gloves inside muffs. Was very comfortable being warm but having lots of feeling..

Was wondering about wiring up some heated grips on my (push)bike, but that could be even better.
Can't really justify it.

Anyway, for the OP; a) your bike looks shit anyway.
B) once you've got muffs, symtek heated grips. But any heated grips are going to be less than ideal without muffs. And we've had a very mild time of it so far too.

^^^^ This. If you think that ANY gloves can do the job muffs do, you do not understand how cold works.

Google wind chill. No matter what gloves wind chill will make your fingers blue ice cold very fast. Muffs work because they stop wind chill way before your gloves.

Let me give you an example put your hand with gloves so that fire touch your glove. Then do the same but leave one inch space. See the difference? The same with cold. You need space filled with air. Wind chill makes the part that contacts with the wind say -15. The actual air temeprature is say 0 degrees. Hence hands inside muffs experience 15 degress warmer air.

Add some rain and it gets worst.

Bikes are like marmite. You'll love it or hate it.

G and I do not agree at times. And on the bike you have we do not agree again, both the SV and the R6 I like.

That said.

I agree with G there. I fitted muffs last year for the first time and even without heated grips the difference was outstanding. So much so that I wouldn't be without them.

I had my bike off the road for a few weeks and have been on a courtesy bike and even in this mild cooler spell I have had cold fingers in my winter gloves. I think with muffs I wore winter gloves for a couple of days around Feb. Mostly I was in light summer gloves.

Yesterday I picked my bike up again and a discussion between myself, one of the mechanics and another customer about how ugly my muffs were ended with both myself and the mechanic saying the same thing. Once fitted and used to you do not care how ugly they are as you are cosy warm and comfortable.
