Right, I'm sure this is an age old question (and indeed it was mine many years ago) however I need it with a more practical twist to it.

I'm looking to buy one of these to restore and keep as a toy as they were the bikes I wanted but couldnt afford 10/11 years ago.

So I'm trying to base getting one of these not only on which is best (I doubt there is much difference) but also which I'm going to be able to get spares (prefferably at a reasonable price) relatively easily for? Also which is going to be easier to work on? I doubt there's that much difference and either are going to be that hard or is this a naieve assumption?

Any help appreciated.

Spares - Aprilia

My mate has been trying to restore a Mito for two years, it's nearly there but parts have been difficult to get his hands on and pretty expensive.

But having said that, the Mito wins it for me, after riding an X-reg RS and a 51 Mito, the Mito just feels nicer to ride, smaller, but I much preferred the Cagiva. Plus seven gears!

Ah thats such a cool idea, retro 17 year old dreams. I keep mulling over getting a typhoon, first two wheel'd thing I ever rode on holiday.

On topic, I'd go for the Mito if I fitted on it, looks soooo cool. If it's just a toy spares arnt too much of an issue.

7 speed mito.

It's pretty. AND it's got 7 gears.

Better thought - KTM 200. Ride it. Much fun!

I think technically the Aprilia's year for year were more advanced and often a touch faster or more powerful. They also had more SP and special versions, and better colours.

The Mito is a right little looker though, and though I'd rather have a rare TZR125R for the rarity, a Mito especially the early versions would be a very cool 125. The same with the Aprilia's though, the AF1's, Futara's and early RS Extrema's look far better than the late 90's> plasticy varients.

I always liked the Gilera GFR too, but good luck getting parts for one of those!

I keep thinking about trying to pick up a cheapo TZR 125 Belgarda, always wanted one for years. But I'm a bit of a Yamorak, even though I'm only twenty there are so many 125s that I want to ride and own, and 50's, I often think about getting an Aprilia MX 50, or 125, and just going mental on it.

But I think about lots of things, often irrelevant to anything. Thumbs Up

I actually don't like the Fugly TZR Belgarda imports. It's the TZR250RR V-twin replica I like which often came in typical late 90's Yam colours like Black with pink and lilac! Laughing

It's a beaut compared to the Belgarda even if it's slower. It's like comparing the ugly TZR 250 Reverse twin to the pretty TZR V-twin. A V-twin might be more restricted and slower as std, but so much better looking!

Hi

My feeling is that the Cagivas are better engineered bikes. Tend to use roller bearings where Aprilia just use a bush. Things fit together nicely (don't mean how the bolt together, rather how components are shaped to complement each other). Aprilia wiring seems better.

Not sure on spares. Not had major issues with the Aprilias, but others have had major problems.

All the best

Keith

Mito's are really small, I sat on one and couldn't ride it as it was too small, I am 5 11. I am sure insurance would be fairly high on these bikes too. With 3 years no claims on my bog standard 125 I pay £230 per year and I pay £93 per year on a gsx 600!?!?!

Try and get an insurance quote, rs parts have better availability. Cagiva still make a 125 2 stroke for the UK, must be the only company to sell a 2 stroke 125.

Would love a Belgarda Yamaha but they seem very expensive and even rarer than the Cagiva's so not sure I'd have much luck getting parts.

As for the bikes being too small it shouldnt be an issue, I'm only 5"7. I will also be 30 by the time I actually get to ride it so I shouldnt think insurance will be a massive issue.

Thanks for the help so far.

@Keith, is there either which is more reliable in your opinion or are they much of a muchness?

@G, you on about the new 4-stroke KTM? or off-road two strokes? If so potentially an SM project but I dont have any desire to go off-road.

They're not all 7 speed.
IIRC, avoid the evo 2, as it's 6 speed, and check the engine hasn't been replaced with an evo2 if you want 7 gears, as they're interchangeable across all models.

Had a Freccia (predecessor to the Mito) and a load of Aprilias. Reliability wise different things go wrong. Freccia / Mito engine seems less prone to sudden piston / ring failures. But the Cagiva engine has the power valve stop adjustment which if you get wrong allows the piston to touch the power valve (with nasty consequences). Cagiva engine has the cut outs for the head gasket O rings in the head, which is a pain as the the O rings fall out when you put the head on!

All the best

Keith
