Wotcha,

Santa is being very nice to me this year and getting me some lovely new Alpinestars due to my current booties having lots of wear on the bits that touch the ground.

https://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz157/mikeallen3lly3900/IMAG0854_zpse5gqkuxu.jpg

My question to the collective is this, is it worth taking my old AS's to the cobblers to get them re-soled and keep them as a spare, or just admit defeat and introduce them to the wheeliebin?

I know that the construction of bike boots is a little more substantial than your average shoe for safety reasons, hence my question.

Cheers

Mike

Are they comfy and are you attached to them? If so, may be worth it. If not, your getting a new pair Very Happy

Suppose it depends of the cost of re-soling too! (And if it lasts!)

Generally not, they are crap.

Get them resoled at Timpsons with a vibram sole, should be about £45.

Not quite the same, but I get what you are implying.

Might pop to the cobblers to get an idea of price, if we are talking about £20 to do then I'll prob's get them done, much more and I think it'd be a bit of a false economy for a spare pair, even if they are so comfortable that I can wear them all day and have no foot ache

Cheers guys

Mike

remoulded tyres are supporting the bike and providing grip and being put through higher stress and strain than your boots are.

I've got a pair of old aldi bike boots under my desk at work, they're quite worn but fine for popping out in my lunch break to the shops / war museum etc without wearing my new boots to go and wander round in.

I used to be a shoe repairer,(a cobbler makes shoes not repairs them, but the term is used loosely in businesses) and I can tell you it won't be worth it. That is, if it can be done at all. The moulded sole won't be the same, and if they use micro(a cheap foam) it won't last long. If they use crepe (hard wearing but flexible rubber) it'll be more expensive but it still won't be the same.
Knowing what I know, I'd just throw them....or use them for spare pillion boots.

I'd bin them tbh, or keep them to give to a pillion. (Or a friend who has pillions more regularly than you might). Unless stopping somewhere and walking around, their feet won't ever touch the ground.

How long have you had the boots? Some people drag their feet which wears soles out, I've barely made a mark on the boots I have worn most though, and they're 4 years old nearly, seen many thousands of miles with feet down quite often. But some people I know can shred a sole in less than a year because they put their foot down at more than a jogging pace and don't lift it up again until they're going pretty quickly off the mark.

If you're in the former, then you'll have got your money out of them and may as well dispose of them. If the latter, then bin them still but don't drag your feet so much with your new boots

And yet Alpinestars even sell their own branded soles for resoling their boots.

Ohhh btw, it depends on how you look at it, but if it's £5, to me it would be false economy.

The oem sole is moulded and incorporated into the boot, a re-sole, or stick on sole (one cuts the old one away and replaces it, the latter just scours the original sole down to accommodate a "stick on" sole), won't adhere properly, and you will end up catching the corner on pegs, kerbs, front door step, stairs, etc. could even be a nasty fall in your future....if....the 'cobbler' has no shame and tries anyway.

that style of molded sole, i wouldnt bother,
but im on my second sole on my sidi couriers,
and hopefully the leather is still in good enough condition for a 3rd resole
at some point,

i like buying gear that can be repaired, rather than replaced

Cheers for the input guys.

Think I'll just chuck them in the cupboard as they are and drag them out if the new ones get too wet to dry out for the next day.

As for dragging feet, I used to do this on the CBF, but seem to have stopped with the V-Strom, must be more confident in my balance abilities on this one Smile

Don't think they'd work for a pillion pair really, I don't know that many people with a size 50 (eu) foot, let alone anyone who rides/pillions Smile

Again, thanks

Mike
