so im a dad now - which is awesome.
but i am riding less and less. most days i have to drop the baby off at a child minders - so unless Kreiga are about to bring out a motorcycle baby carry back pack - im in the car.
ive got a stunning 2012 Street triple R - ive kept it in pristine condition and now its just sitting there costing me money. The mrs has also just heard about a friend of a friend of friend (you know the story) whos been badly injured on their bike. So after many rows and battles i uttered those terrible words 'fine, i'll get rid of the bike'.
The mrs is very pleased with herself.
thankfully i was careful with the wording.. of course im not going to give up riding! Mwahaha but the STR needs to go early next year.
so my question is.. if you were to get something cheaper than the 2012 STR, just as good looking, ideally as much fun. what would you get? the amount of riding i do is going to be less. so what would be a reasonably priced, 4-5 year old great bike?
Would you sell the STR, pay off outstanding finance and then go shopping, or are there good PX/swap deals to done?
someone tell me theres a happy ending to this..... ____________________ er6-f, triumph street triple R |

TBH and I don't mind getting slated for this, as I've never had a bike as capable and fun as an STR or a big bike for over 5years, why do you need something that's big and capable if your a busy dad with far less time for riding.
I'd be enjoying being a dad and family life, and also freeing up quite a bit of money depending on the value of the STR that could be used for other things or more useful things.
If it were me, I'd be saying to the other half, well lets decide on how best to use the majority of the cash from the bike sale, but by the way I am still going to get something cheap to stick in the garage, mess around with and occasionally ride when I have spare time.
I'd say that £1500-2000 would get you a nice useable, fun and safe ridable bike that for the amount of use your going to get out of it might as well cost you less to buy and insure etc.
Or you could go <£1000 and buy an old project bike. I would expect that having the time to work on it much could be an issue, and you might just want to do the riding bit when you get an hour or so free, but having something old to rebuild and renovate could be just as satisfying if your that way inclined?
I'd like a bigger bike again at some point, I don't need one and won't use one for all year round commuting, but I'd be happy with something old and characterful, like an MK1 Speed triple that I've got a bit of a thing for these days, even though I say I must own a V-max one day. |

Simple. The missus has to go. You should know where your priorities lie. |

Am I missing the point, but if the issue is safety then why is a cheaper bike going to make a difference? And if the issue is money, how is losing a big stack on a financed bike going to be a saving?
I would try to agree a comprimise, wait until you have paid off the STR and hope she forgets it by then. If not, it still sounds like a "I fear for your life" scenario which is a different argument altogether. For the record, I got my first big bike around the time my son was born, my wife is a big worrier but has never suggested that my bike could be a health hazard! ____________________ Current: 2009 SV650 S, 1990 Kawasaki GT550
