So am trying to wire this extractor fan up to a plug is was supplied with. i know where the blue and brown wires go. Now the problem is i don't know where the green wire goes am guessing its the earth. The extractor manual says it its double insuited does this mean i can just chop the green wire off an am good to go?

Green and yellow wires are earth, yes. It's typically best to actually wire it to earth, as opposed to just cutting it off - double-insulation's nice and everything, but proper earthing is better.

Caveat - I am not a sparky, I just happen to have wired a few things up and not died yet.

Can't you just screw the earth to the screw holding the chassis together?
Bit pointless, given that the screw doesn't go to earth, it just holds two bits of plastic together.

Just chop the earth off double insulated means no need to be earthed.

Fixing it inside even 'pointlessly' will look better and avoid the slight risk of cut off earth cable giving a shock if something else is wired wrong or goes faulty.

They provided an earth wire for a reason so use it. It'll take an extra 30 seconds or so to terminate it in the earth pin and as pointed out, it'll get it out of the way safely. Thumbs Up

ETA..

Gah, it wasn't clear from the OP that it was the fan and not the plug. That'll teach me to open the attachments. Laughing

There's nowhere to terminate it so cut it right back to the outer insulation and forget it.

If you havnt got any connector blocks I would terminate it to the screw for the cable clamp like someone else mentioned. Just for future use.

Btw, inline fan on a plug top?

No earth needed. I'd usually use a bit of heat shrink to make the wire safe
from earthing issues elsewhere in the system.
Double square logo means double insulated

This thread has been rather informative ...I now know of 2 new ways to pronounce "Insulation Tape" Wink

Years ago I was working onsite and this Irish labourer cut his finger open. He had wrapped some blue roll round it and came and asked me if I had any of that inspiration tape to bind round it. Ive called it that ever since! Wink

Its double insulated, it doesn't need an earth, OP should just terminate the earth cable in a chock block or something so there is no bare end laying in there to cause a problem. This is done in case another incompetent comes along for a play!
