Just found a letter saying I am being fined £80 for not taxing my pit bike. Crying or Very sad

What I think has happened, is I bought it when the tax was running out, so they sent the reminder to the previous owner, the V5 was then processed and so I never got a tax reminder.

The letter was sent out on the 23rd of October. I found it just now in a pile of junk mail, unopened. They gave me a deadline of 18/12/2014 to pay the fine. That's today. It says it gets seized if not paid.

Another thing is that I can't do it online because it's some random chinky bike on the logbook, not recognised anywhere.

Anyone with some legal knowledge help!

They should understand the doc ref no, my car isn't recognised anywhere but HPI and doc ref.

Try doing SORN instead to bail you out for a sec. Thumbs Up

Just went to sorn it, it says the last tax/sorn expired on 01/07/2014 but the letter says 31/08/2014.

Something is definitely up with this, I didn't sorn it online in the end because I want to keep that as evidence. There has to be something there to argue. I just spoke to my mate, he insists he sorn'd it before selling it to me.

I may have to ring them up tomorrow.

And the bold shows your problem....

When you sell a bike/car the SORN is taken off and the NEW OWNER has to do it again....

Beaten to it. Laughing

How very co-incidentally convenient that you just happened to open the demand on the last day before action, eh.

Just SORN it now then await further developments. For the love of Hannigan, don't contact them.

DVLA collections NSL won't give a stuff about your "yehbut, Daz sed den deze dates is well bogus" story. Vehicle Excise Duty isn't fair, there's no contract, and the whole purpose of it is to rinse us for money.

If you want to tell them a tale, you can do it when the court summons hits the mat.

Ignore it, I got sent a letter saying the same thing when I didn't sorn my GS in like 2008.

Never got a penny and I taxed the bike this month without any fees or charges mentioned.

I know, it seems weird how stuff like this happens to me quite regularly. They, like you, would automatically call bullshit on my story.

I did read on t'internet about another story where the bloke went to court, I can't deal with that. I may just have to chalk this down to experience and bear it in mind when I buy another sorn'd vehicle.

I'll sorn it and pray the fine goes away? Terrible idea?

Yes, SORN it! Do it naow, get to the choppa, etc.

You haven't been 'fined'. You have a blackmail demand. It might get passed to their collections goons (NSL now rather than Capita) as a 'debt'. It's not, ignore it.

We have had folk say that they've been refused further VED until they clear the 'debt', but that's not an issue if you only use it offroad.

Don't sweat it, they only chase up a minority of 'offenders', and they seem to spend most of their time humping Paddy's leg anyway. Wink

This happened to me this year, I sent them a letter saying I was away in Afghanistan and they were fine with that. No further letters or attempts to charge me money.

Sorn'd it last night. I caught my mum ringing the DVLA this morning explaining what happened. They dropped the charge to £40.

I still reckon I should have ignored it after sorning it. But I had no say in the matter and my mum reckons we should do the right thing, wrong thing, we're just teaching them that this is acceptable behaviour! Laughing

How did your mother even know?

Eh, never mind. That was a bad move as they'll now have you marked as a soft touch.

I would continue to ignore it (and have done) until and unless a court summons hits the mat. You can keep negotiating all the way up to the courtroom door. A prosecution (for not having VED or SORN which it sound like mumsie has just admitted by proxy) won't put a penny in their coffers, which is all they care about.

I tried to explain to her my problem and she took it upon herself to deal with it. I had already been speaking with my dad, he told me not to let them get anything! He agreed that no contact should be made, it should just be sorn'd and ignored. I can't see them trying to take me to court over £80.

Do you reckon they've got a list of all the pushovers on a wall somewhere? All the people that ignore their letters aren't there and so never get anymore letters off them.

Can't say. I've never contacted them about their threats and have never been prosecuted.

Paddy's on first name terms with his personal prosecutor by now.

If I'd been involved in developing their system then at some point I would have suggested that priority be given to mugging victims who had made contact. I'd then shower, but I'd never be clean.

Mugging those who have tried to do the right thing isn't fair, but that's not the point of VED.
