Rode most the way home and stopped in at a mates shop for a cuppa to let traffic disappear a bit before carrying on.

down the slip road, merged into traffic, noticed the car in front was starting to brake so applied the brakes as I otherwise would, realise we're not just slowing, we're stopping, so squeeze a little bit more, again, nothing out of the norm

I'm now running out of room and the rear is fishtailing (so I must have locked the back but I don't recall stomping on)

Managed to stop with a couple of inch spare (really thought I was going to hit the car) and after coming to a stop found the engine had stopped (don't recall feeling it stall)


So, what did I do wrong?

I don't recall grabbing / stomping on the brake, just that I was running out of space (hadn't been following close)

or did I simply find a bit of tarmac with less grip than elsewhere.

I did find a quiet slip road to try the brakes on again and everything seemed fine and normal

If you left the clutch engaged then that would explain the stalling and possibly extra engine braking causing the back wheel to lock too?

Many slip roads lead off from a roundabout. Many roundabouts have petrol stations. Fuel spills at the pump get on your tyres and spread down the nearby roads as the vehicles leave after brimming the tank and whizz around the roundabout, making them lethal. Trade vehicle drivers are the worst (B.T. and building and road contractors, parcel delivery vans etc.) as they are always in a rush and fill up to the brim because the boss is paying. I hate roundabouts with filling stations. In the wet you can usually see the multi-coloured fuel streaks.

I have noticed that my local council seems to have found a way to save money by not using Road Sweepers so often, and some of the roads around here are covered in a thin mulch of rotting leaves - which is almost as bad as diesel spills, and harder to notice.

Locked the rear up the other day - but it's a drum and I hadn't been on it for a nearly a week. I know it gets snatchy due to rust quickly building up on the inside, creating more friction. So I was being careful whenever I needed to slow down. But the roads were even worse than I thought - damp all over, no dry lines. Been like that for a week or more, with no decent rain to wash them. Luckily I was only going slowly, but still - surprising how slippery the surface can get when it's been permanently damp for days on end. Especially the busier town roads, which this was.

I must say the Michelin pilot activs on the divvy are far superior to the bt45's it had on before.the grip is excellent on these cold slippy roads

Once put my knee through a guys rear light while sliding in avoidance mode.

Surprisingly HE apologised to ME for not jumping the amber/red light that we were both aiming for.

clutch in and applying the rear brake a smidgen to hard will lock it really quick in my experience. if I am ever breaking, its hard to get out of the habbit of break in clutch in approach. Car driving habits pfft

Haven't seen what bike it is.

As others have said, slippy road, cold tyres etc but can't hurt to double check tyre pressures and tread depth.
