I have a Canon Powershot S110 and a Drift Ghost hd.
The S110 I love , it is tiny so you can stick it in your pocket and take it everywhere. Full manual control and much better image quality then a phone.
The Drift is only my second action camera but seems to do everything it should. The fish eye thing is a bit of a fad and gets old pretty quickly when using it for photos.

Been thinking about buying something a little more involving, a DSLR or system compact but not really sure if I'd use it enough. As you need to make a special effort to go out and take photos rather then just being out and shooting something interesting.

What do you have, use it much?

a couple of pocket cameras and a nice collection of floppy disk cameras all made by Sony, my fav is the Sony FD95 with 2 Mpixel max , I prefer these cameras as they have an optical viewfinder though I do use a mini disc Sony CD500 which only has a screen.

I have a 450d that's ~7 years old now, with a 50mm prime, the standard kit lens and a 55-250.

Then I have a Sony Cybershot HX9V as my point and shoot.

I used to take the DSLR everywhere on holidays / events except when hiking due to size / bulk. Nowadays I just take the Cybershot. It's a really good camera, for all but motorsport shots. I don't take motorsport shots anymore as I'd rather just watch the racing.

From the little I know of photography, it all depends on the usage. I went to Iceland a few weeks ago and borrowed a Nikon D3100 for the Northern Lights. As you have to be able to set the camera for long exposure times, a D-SLR was required for that. I had a look on my phone to take a panoramic shot, since the lights stretch from horizon to horizon, but you can't see a thing.

Any camera that has manual control could be set to a slow shutter speed though, it wouldn't necessary have to be a dslr. I think you can even get apps and stuff for phones to control shutter speed.

GoPro Hero 4 Silver with various mounts, not really tested it yet on the bike, will mostly be using the chesty mount for convenience sake.

Camera is just a cheap little Fuji digital I picked up from Tesco of all places. It has constantly surprised me with the quality of some of the shots I've taken with it. Nothing to a professional standard, but good enough for my needs. Compact, fits in a jacket pocket, so it's always handy.

Video camera is another cheapy, an Action Cam 3. Quality isn't brilliant, but I bought it just to see how I'd get along with it. It doesn't have many mounting options, and no screen to check it's orientation, although I pretty much know how to mount it to get the pic I want now (after a few great vids of sky or tarmac Rolling Eyes ), but now on the verge of buying something better quality, as I'm putting together some compilations of various rides I've done (don't worry, won't inflict them on you lot Laughing ) and could do with more than one camera to achieve what I want to.

Is it just me that doesn't like to have a camera helmet mounted? Watching some footage of cameras mounted this way makes me seasick Sick But I need a way to get one mounted at that kind of height to catch scenic shots, so will be thinking along the lines of some kind of pole mount.

I have a Fuji Finepix S6800 bridge camera. 16Mp. 30X (720mm eq) zoom and it has taken some fantastic pictures.

I do find myself lusting after a DSLR though as I could use more settings, having 2-3 aperture stops (zoom depending) is just not cutting it for me anymore along with a max 8 second exposure. I need moar! MOAR! MOAR PWAR!

I have the Canon S100 but before that had a Canon 300D then a 5D.
The SLR is obviously significantly better but such a pain to carry around it is used less and less.
The S100 does RAW and when put through Lightroom the quality is more than good enough for what I need.
The thing is it's not just the SLR body but you pretty much *need* at least two lenses so even more stuff to carry.
I never take it on the bike now, the S100 is the size of a pack of cards and does the job.

However, thing is that using an SLR helps you get more out of the compact manual modes rather than just taking snaps.
Even so if starting over now I would only get a 'good' compact that does RAW - and make up any shortcomings with my knowledge of Lightroom and Photoshop.

Canon 5Dmk2
Canon 550D
Various lenses ranging from 8mm fisheye to 300mm telephoto.
GoPro Hero 2
Phone (Motorolla Moto G 2nd Gen)

I don't mind carrying my DSLR around and in fact I prefer it over my GoPro for riding photos. Not for on bike videos though. Saying that my 5D & 24-70L comes in at just under 2kg so I understand why some people don't want to be carrying that around all day.

I took my DSLR travelling around S.E. Asia for 6 months with two lenses and it was fine. I don't really take that many photos when I'm out and about just running errands but the camera on my phone is ok for snapping things I either need to remember or think is funny. I'm sure _Will_ will be here soon to tell us that the best camera is the one you have on you Laughing

I reckon the camera market is changing at the moment. Some of the Sony mirrorless cameras look really great for roughly the same price as an equivalent DSLR yet are much smaller and in some cases have better features than DSLR's (Sony A7s low light performance just an example). Videographers are moving away from DSLR's as well now so I think it will be interesting to see what new developments the big camera brands will come up with to keep DSLR's relevant and selling. If I was rich I'd actually be excited about this Laughing

I could do with a more powerful zoom, but not at the expense of it no longer fitting in my pocket, or being lots more expensive cos it has loads of features I don't understand how to use Laughing

Canon 5DMkII and various flashes, lenses etc. - I use it for work stuff now and again, although I don't get paid extra for doing so Confused it's satisfying to see my pics 'in print'. It's a pain lugging it all about, but you can do things with it you just can't do with a compact, and I still think looking through a viewfinder is the best way to compose a picture.

Canon Ixus 220 HS tiny compact thing, I got this so I'd always have something a little more flexible than a camera phone when I was out and about. It doesn't seem very substantial though.

Pretty pathetic selection for me.

Samsung S3 - in all honesty the quality itself would be enough for me, but the motion-focus/lighting-sensor (probably not the right technical terms Razz) is terrible most of the time.

Otherwise its the Drift 720. For the price I can't really fault it, although I am thinking about getting a 1080 Drift if I can get one cheap enough soon, would be nice to get 'photo-quality' screengrabs off it. Not a fan of Go-Pros bulky shape for helmet/bike cams etc.

Nikon D5200 - use it every time I know I will be taking photos

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (20.7 MP camera in mobile phone, not bad) - not really tested it yet

Samsung Galaxy S4 - ok photos as long as it's bright, night time photos are shite

Drift HD Ghost - rubbish photos, but it's used mainly for videos and it does the job

I know you're probably not expecting actual decent photo quality from 1080p screen grabs and I know I'm speaking with a few grand of camera equipment in my bag but I would seriously lower your expectations. These are screen grabs from my GoPro Hero 2 on a bright sunny day which was filming 1080p @30fps:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/012_KLR_Photo_Guide_zps6906e437.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/013_KLR_Photo_Guide_zpsd3d97e33.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v331/serenaur/011_KLR_Photo_Guide_zpsd1414e88.jpg

I will concede that in the case of riding around the Nürburgring then it was worth having the photos this way than not having them at all but I would never print those photos and expect them to be good quality nor would I expect anyone to be impressed by them when viewed on a normal sized screen. I certainly wouldn't be buying a camera just because of the higher resolution to take video screen grabs from the footage. Maybe it would be worthwhile with the GoPro 3/4 that can record video at 4k but then that's a rather large chunk of cash. Does your current Drift not have a photo function?

I have a drift ghost HD too, but the stills from it are quite poor - you might just as well do a screengrab from video afterwards if you wanted a quick still from it.
This is is a screen grab from a video viewed fullscreen from it.
