Rebuilt R1 clutch slipping, doubled diaphragm now too heavy!

Hi All,

I recently installed a new clutch kit in my 03 R1 (5PW). I fitted new friction plates, steel plates and diaphragm spring. The old clutch was slipping badly (if you accelerated from around 110 it would just hit the limiter for ages until it caught again and it wouldn't wheelie at all).

So after soaking the new plates in oil for around 12 hours and installing them along with the new steels and diaphragm spring I went out for a ride (on private land obviously). It will now wheelie but it still slips when accelerating from 110+. I've doubled up the diaphragm spring with the old one which seems to have stopped it slipping but now the clutch lever is very very heavy and hard to use for slow speed manoeuvring.

So, what could be causing it to slip? If I fit a barnett spring conversion will this solve my issues or will it be just as heavy? It was all adjusted correctly.

Did the clutch basket look like this?

If so,the fingers could be dressed down with a needle file.

What engine oil did you use to soak the new plates and what do you use in the engine?

How many miles has the bike done?

I'm a great fan of going back to standard when this sort of problem happens. Go back to the standard diaphragm spring and settings and test again.

If it still slips I would wager there is something wrong in that the full spring pressure is not coming on the plates, and needs to be addressed.

If Mr Yamaha thought it needed 'doubled up' diaphragm springs, do you think he would not have fitted them?

In my business (marine engineering) we have a saying, 'Fix it, don't mask it' because marine engineer are the biggest bodgers on the planet. (way better than Paddy )
