 Posted: 10:30 - 30 Dec 2014 Post subject: Selling a vehicle - tax included or not |
 |
|
So I'm selling a car. It's currently taxed which I have just paid out for, which I intend to claim back under the new vehicle taxation laws.
A potential buyer has expressed interest in buying, but then wants me to give him the money back for the tax as he'll then have to tax it (he will pay full asking price, but then wants me to give him the money that I receive for the remaining tax).
He says 'Because I think I'm buying the vehicle with almost a year's tax so it should have tax'.
I say 'But the asking price is not taking the tax into consideration, and it's non-transferable'.
What you guys reckon? I say according to the new laws you're not buying the tax with the vehicle, but just the vehicle itself and it's up to the new owner to tax it.
Let me hear your thoughts. I know this is all a relatively new process and the first time I'm selling a vehicle under these new regulations.. thanks! ____________________ Yamaha RXS 100 > Honda CD 250 > Honda Hornet 600 > Honda CBR 600RR > Yamaha RXS 100 > Kawasaki ZX6R J2 > Yamaha FZ1 |

Yep, I'm not taking a penny less than asking price so by refunding the tax I am cutting myself short of around £130.
It's just a bargaining point, as you say - so I am going to be sticking to the new law as tax being 'up to the new owner' and it doesn't really make a different if it's currently taxed with me or not. ____________________ Yamaha RXS 100 > Honda CD 250 > Honda Hornet 600 > Honda CBR 600RR > Yamaha RXS 100 > Kawasaki ZX6R J2 > Yamaha FZ1 |

Forgot to mention, he's a 64 year old guy that buys and restores classic Minis (mine is a 1995 model in excellent condition, that he wants to use right straight away).
He's very used to the old taxation laws where the tax is included, and doesn't get why not anymore.
He also wants me to deliver it to him in Sittingbourne, from my place in North East London.
Luckily I have another viewer coming to see the car tomorrow who seems pretty definite too Thanks for replies guys, as long as it's not just me thinking this way! ____________________ Yamaha RXS 100 > Honda CD 250 > Honda Hornet 600 > Honda CBR 600RR > Yamaha RXS 100 > Kawasaki ZX6R J2 > Yamaha FZ1 |

edit: as Ste said above.
If I hadn't mentioned tax I would have been subject to a lot more stupid questions. I wrote it in the way that it is currently taxed but will not be transferred. Nothing ambiguous there at all.
I never said anything about road-worthy, just that it currently having tax means it is being driven on the roads.
My question was only due to this law being so recent I wanted to find out 'the done thing.

Ok so you like to hand money unnecessarily to the taxman. Most of us don't. I would, as a buyer, assume that a car wouldn't be taxed if it wasn't being used on the road.
Tax doesn't necessarily mean there's nothing wrong with it but for the reasons above it usually means "in use" - why would you pay tax on a vehicle you weren't using? |
Why get the tax refunded just for the period of time it takes to fix it?
Last bike had tax but needed a rear tyre, why cancel it for that reason?
Car needed a new head when timing belt snapped. All had tax before the faults, so why bother with the hassle for a small period of time?
On the flip side, I had a car with a brand new MOT, but no tax on SORN, as it was being sold, MOT was due, so I got the MOT but left it on SORN as it wasn't going to be used.
To make assumptions based on whether somebody purchased tax or not as to the road worthyness of the car is silly.
But as G said, it's all irrelevant. All I said was that, I can see where the confusion is. ____________________ covent.gardens: lihp is my most favourite member ever |
