Honda CRF250

It's a price I'm happy (ish) with, it's be a mainly off road toy (must be road legal though). I know it's not the quickest but still....
Any opinions before I toddle along and buy it?

Best enduro bike around IMO. Best option is get an X and put R suspension on it, then twiddle the engine a bit and you get essentially an electric start MX bike.

DRZ can fuck off, what a heavy piece of shit.

There was an earlier thread about the 250L it's probably more road biased but can be improved with decent tyres for a start.

The KLX? I quite like it. Current model has fuel injection too & the carburettor was a bit iffy on the road tests in reviews.

https://www.kawasaki.co.uk/en/products/dual_purpose/2015/klx250/specifications?Uid=0919DFxeXFoMWVAJWQoKXAsJXgpYX1tbDAwMUFAJW14MUQo

This might help you out:

https://www.mcnews.com/mcn/features/2013Jan250DS.pdf

I assume we're talking about the slightly milder tuned trail bikes rather than competition enduro and motocross machines?

Whilst the DRZ is a fine bike and a better road bike, it doesn't compare to a CRF which is a proper competition machine and probably 40% lighter. Maintenance is where you pay for that though, and parts prices can be expensive. I own a 450R but talking to the guys in Vic Eastwood Racing the 250's can suffer from valve problems as they get revved so much harder than the 450's (especially if it's the MX 'R' version), so if it is difficult to start then it may need the top end looking at.

I agree with mattsprattuk - get the enduro 'X' model - electric start (although not great judging from the 450X) is a bonus (has a kicker too, you will be using this so get used to it) and has a better spread of gears compared to the 'R' model I think - the 450 does anyway. The X models will possibly have led a slightly easier life as well. You should also get a reserve switch, a slightly bigger tank, a (crap) headlight/tail light and a softer cam (well the 450 does anyway).

Lastly don't discount the 450, more grunt makes it easier to ride and the weight difference is negligable.

I think in terms of usability, a competition 450 is just too much unless it's on a motocross track.
The pretty much "must have " mods for a 250x are a cam and steel inlet valves. This brings service levels down to that of a regular tappet bike. Takes about an hour or two start to finish on it.

I don't think a 450X with the standard cam is too bad, good call on the inlet valves though, 250 or 450 Thumbs Up

There are quite a few differances between the 'L' model and the 'X' model. That they are completely differant machines is an aside Wink

I'm referring to the lower tuned, gentle bikes, yep! I'm after a bike to ride on the road to get slightly muddy for a change, not a competetion bike at all - light off road use, gentle trials...

Ahh, forget everything I said then, thought you were on about the competition machine.

I thought the soft version was a CRF230L, seems not.

250L is goopd option then, really low running costs too - stupidly long service intervals and 80mpg

I'd just get a XR250, pay someone to set it up if that's your thing and save a big wodge of cash - unless you can get a L model CRF for under £1.5k, that is.

Or, the DRZ-E route. Where you get a bike that's only a bit heavier for a good bit less cash and with a more flexible engine.

CRM 250!

Feels as quick as a mates CRF250R. Mine cost £1400, Previous Owner had restored her, engine is great, I cracked the tonne on mine, gets about 30-60MPG, hahahaha! Laughing Depends how you ride. Nice and reliable, easy maintenance, and two stroke! Nice and light, suspension feels the mutt's nuts after my TTR, only problem is spinning up the rear wheel on tarmac. Laughing You go to wheelie, third gear, clutch in, rev, lean back a bit, dump clutch, wheel-spin down the road instead. Thumbs Up And accelerating hard in first and second if it's leant over a bit will cause it to slide.

I say that as if it's some form of monster. It's not, I just have a terrible tyre on the back and a lead right hand. Twisted Evil

I rang my insurance yesterday (NYE) and GOT A QUOTE ON THE Honda 250, swapping the cover from my Chinese 125.
It's about £120 extra (per annum) but 3rd Party only. There's a Ducati 1198 worth rather more as the main bike on the policy, fully comp. the underwriter (!!!) won't touch a 75mph 250 fully comp. I'd guess this is due to the likelyhood of damage from the odd off road drop?
(Oh, the cost for the five minute call to the insurance folk would cost £35. That's just admin charge. £35 for five minutes, and an emailed insurance certificate. Twats, that's a bloody joke!)

Comparison website, separate policy, £90 per year fully comp with the [/b]same insurer . That's with zero ncd. Are they taking the piss out of me?

Wtf. Pretty sure my 5 bike fiasco w/ carol nash is *significantly* cheaper TPF&T than FC, and cheaper again TP only.
