My bike is not starting, when I press the ignition I just get a clicking noise. The battery failed due to the cold not holding charge so got another one. When I have the charger connected and the volts around 13v it just clicks and fails to turn over. What would this problem be?

Should point out the 2nd batt doesn't appear to be holding a charge well so going tore place it but shouldn't a charger connected to the batt putting 13v through start the bike?

Check regulator and the main fuse on the starter solenoid.

How do you check the regulator? If the fuse had gone woulditbe still click?

It's not the regulator, locate the starter solenoid, take it off, and clean the contacts of it. If that won't help, then the starter might be sticking, or the grounding of the starter is corrupted.

EDIT: Or the solenoid is done, of course. Thumbs Up

The old battery won't hold the charge it slowly drops but when connected to the bike it will light the ignition lights etc but won't turn over just clicks. The new battery is faulty the volts drop from 13 on charge to 1 in seconds so this is going back. On the bike it shows no lights and no clicking

A charger connected would start the bike - if said charger was capable of delivering over 100 amps...........

If you have a 'normal' charger capable of putting out like 6 amps (at a push) then the relay would click. If you have something like an optimate it might not even do that.

Voltage without current means nothing.

I have a halfords 2-4 amp charger for bikes. That would def not turn the bike over would it?

It might be just enough to test the solenoid off the bike - I have a bench power supply that I use for testing stuff like that, and that is set at 13.8v and 2.4A max.

It's plenty for the solenoid, but wouldn't be anywhere near enough to spin the starter motor.

I always think that when you have electrical problems, you need to start by making sure the battery is good, and all earthing points between battery, frame and engine are solid.

Bought a new battery today just on charge so will test in a few hours

Bridge the contacts of the solenoid with a screwdriver and see if it cranks

New battery on fires up straight away. Other new one was faulty and not holding a charge.

So, if a regulator fails and it stops charging the battery alltogether that couldn't possibly cause the previously good battery to become flat?
