 |
|
My winter gloves are knackered, and I need a new pair. After my last pair being absolutely terrible and getting cold in the first 5 minutes even with my handlebar muffs on, I'm gonna need some suggestions from experience.
I know I can go on an online shop and browse through all their marketing jargon which contains the likes of "triple insulated ultra warm makes your hand feel like roast chicken". I know I could even go up the road to the local J&S and wear a pair to see how they feel, but none of that is going to actually prove that they stay warm when I'm actually riding with them on.
Soooo, suggest me bcf ta
Edit: Heated gloves cost too much and are a pain to fiddle with. Looking for regular gloves. |

I've currently got 4 pairs of winter gloves, of which 2 share my title of "best winter gloves I've worn".
They're a Hein Gericke Touring Classic pair, and Alpinestars WR-V.
The AStars are warmer, drier and more comfortable inside, but more awkward to get on/off and bulky too.
The Hein Gericke are much easier to get on/off and adjust, but they are not quite as warm to start with, and a lot less now they're getting old and worn, and they also aren't amazingly waterproof.
Eventually though the hands will get cold with both gloves. The most effective preventions I found were heated grips, and keeping your core body warm.
Warm body = warm hands and feet. Extra layers under jacket and trousers will keep your core warm which in turn means warm blood is kept flowing round your body, rather than diverted away from extremities. ____________________ Current Bike: 1999 Honda CB600 FX Hornet

Cheers for some solid suggestions, will have a look into these.
Also about the core temp thing, when it's quite cold I layer up a lot and tend to be able to keep my body very warm. I've been told it's counter productive to pack layers on though apparently, sometimes I do end up feeling squished into my leathers with all the layers on underneath, it apparently constricts blood circulation somewhat but fuckit it feels warm XD
My winter rig typically goes vest, wooly top, hoodie, leather jacket with thermal liner, and if it's super cold I throw a t shirt under all that too. Face it goes Bandana, with balaclava around mouth/neck (at one point I had an actual wooly scarf on when shit got real). Never really do more than just leathers for the legs and they do get a bit chilly sometimes so I should probably switch to textiles with thermal liner but I haven't got around to that yet. Boots are always very warm.
So yeah just gloves now, the hunt goes on. |

How much were you going to spend? For example, say it was £100, you could get heated grips and gloves for that, rather than spend £100 on gloves alone that won't be much better than the cheaper ones.
I'm still on summer gloves, the tips of my fingers get a slight chill but so far it's nothing to worry about lol ____________________ I want your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle.

Am I the only person still wearing summer gloves?
Slightly cold by the time I reach work some mornings but it's been very mild down south. ____________________ Yamaha MT-09 - Triple powerrrr |

I've got heated under gloves and a pair of £30 waterproof gloves that go over them.
quicker and easier to fit to the bike (wiring harness for the gloves) but more faff each time you ride, but finger ends are kept warm better than I imagine grips would achieve ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

What's your budget?
https://www.motorcyclegear.com/image/path/54471/Held_Twin-1.jpg
Best solution is a set of Held Twin's and heated grips.
The twin pocket design means you get all the insulation on top of your hand, and a thinner glove underneath to allow you to feel the heat coming off the hotgrips easier. All goretex insulated too & propperly armoured unlike the more budget freindly Richa GTX. |

Muffs, you can then wear summer gloves and laugh at all others with their fiddly heated grips and super expensive goretex gloves as they still get cold hands.
Though for short journeys I don't use them. Currently have a pair of Richa Summit which seem really good for a £30 glove, pretty warm, waterproof, handy wiper blade on finger. Did have to wear some thin gloves under them on Christmas day though in the Brecon Beacons. |

I bought a pair of silk gloves from one of those outdoor/camping/mountaineering type shops.
They weren't cheap, but they make a heck of a difference when worn under normal goretex gloves. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

Rukka Goretex Lobster gloves, £100~
https://customlids.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/500x500/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/l/o/lobster.jpg
I've also got a set of Tucano Urbano muffs indoors which I still don't need to use even down to freezing.
I find these better than the old Hein Gerike lobster gloves which I use as spares as the Rukka ones are goretex and have a little visor wipe on the LH glove.
Don't need muffs, heated grips or inner gloves or any other thing apart from just the gloves ____________________ Rides: Honda XR 125 ('03) Honda CBR 600F ('91), Ducati 916 Biposto ('95) |

The joy of heated grips is when you are caught out in summery kit, they are still there. I like the feel of the current Oxford Touring grips, firm and rubbery, not smooth and hard like r&g heated grips. Not as nice as unheated progrips, but better than the stock grips on any of the bikes I've had.
Cheap sports base layers work well, just bought a stash of campari longsleeves in a sale at a sportshop I accidentally walked past. Close fitting enough to work well under leathers, look enough like a long sleeve to wear with a T-shirt, or will hide under a dress shirt.
Army green long green underwear also works well, but is harder to disguise.
I have a heated waistcoat thing, it's too bulky in my favourite kit, gets in the way of connecting zips, and is a pain to control. ____________________ Bandit. does. everything. |
