Hey everyone, so a pretty crappy thing happened. I bought a 98 ZZR400 a couple of days ago, it has several problems with it but it was cheap, and for my first bike I knew I wanted something I wouldn't mind banging up, but I did not expect what would happen. Today I was making sure all the lights worked and the headlight worked only to find out the battery was dead, I then went to set the bike down, but forgot the kick stand was down, so as a result my left footrest and gearshifter literally bent off of the bike, it's still attached with the lever to the transmission, but I can spin the shifter like a clock. Anyone know how much this would be to fix?

Might be worth taking a nice clear picture for us to have a look at.
On here it's unlikely we'll be able to give you a quote for repair, but might well be able to help you repair it yourself.

Foot pegs and gear shifter should be easy to replace using ebay, but show us a pic first.

Regarding your battery, get it on charge!

Your '98 model will be a 400N so you can use parts from a 600E ('93 onward ZZR). eBay is flooded with bits from breakers so fixing costs peanuts.

If you want the manuals for the bike in PDF (for the 600 but all is same bar the engine top end) PM me an email address and I'll send them at some point today.

Go on eBay find someone breaking a ZZR600E and ask them for the left hand riders footpeg bracket/hanger.

Just to confirm though that your 400 is an N model it was made in 1998? or imported in 1998? If its declared date of manufacture is 1990, 91, 92 then it's a K model and you need the part from a 600D model. If it's declared date of manufacture is '93 onward then it will be an N model and you want the part from a 600E

The actual pedal doesn't look broke in the picture. If you can't be arsed swapping it over though just ask whoever you ask for the part for the hanger and all the bits attached should still cost b-all.

Because you have 'removed' it's fixed pivot point...

Put a new hanger (/assembly) on and it should be fine.

You could if your only goal is to make it look not broken for a while... You wouldn't be able to ride it with it JB'd.

Just to check, if you hold the broken bits together with one hand, does the shifter seem to have about the same amount of movement as it did before you broke it?

Yeah when I put everything back in place it looks fine to me, I'm pretty sure it's in neutral still, but the battery is dead so I can't tell

Yes you can - if you can push it along without the back wheel sliding or the engine turning over, it's in neutral.....

If it's more than just the 'rose/ball joint' (for want of a better term that isn't springing to memory right now) allowing it to 'spin' - y'know, like it should - i.e. if the splines have stripped/the shaft has snapped etc., I will give you 30p.

It's a remote linkage for the shift lever - if it didn't 'spin' you wouldn't be able to change gear.

Vincent wrote:
It could be expensive I'm afraid Sad That part sits on the end of the gear selecter shaft and is kept in place by splines. If they have worn off the actual shaft, it's not that easy to sort....there are repairs, but they don't always work too well. However, if the selecter has either snapped or the splines on that have gone, you'll just need a new gear lever....or just the part that fastens on the shaft. You need to get it off and have a closer look. If the lever has snapped, it'll be cheap to put right.

I think that the OP's description may be causing some confusion. I reckon that he is referring to the ball and socket joint that is above the splined parts that you're referring to.

Edit: beaten to it by pdg.

You ever break it enough you want to sell it, PM me. I've got a 400K project at the moment (and another on the road) but I want a 400N in 2016 for my next project.
