I haven't put this in Dear Auntie cos my decision is made, but if anyone has any thoughts on the place, I'd be interested to hear.

I've got next week booked off to go and view a couple of properties, have a nose around the city and surrounding area (weather permitting!), and stumbled across this one, which I have arranged to view:

https://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/35670662#S3zOVEJvPwKfXxBH.97

Looks perfect to me, dat workshop! Wub

So yeah, I'm gonna take my chances on that city, main reasons being I don't want to be stuck in some one-horse country town again, it's near my beloved Lake District for fell walking, got plenty of options for good biking days out, will allow me to explore Scotland some more, near the M6 for getting to other regions if need be etc etc.

Found a couple of likely places for future employment, with whom I will at least leave my CV as a starting point for my job hunt, but I think I'm going to take a summer sabbatical first, and have some fun on the bike (bikes? still got my heart fixed on that Street Triple Cool ). So far, all is looking good, just depends on when my current house sells (going on the market in the next couple of weeks), but local estate agents reckon it'll be an easy sell.

Bring it on! Very Happy

Shed looks ace. Not sure why it's marketed as a detached property though. Semi at best, end terrace is what they used to be called. No snobbery here, I just don't know why estate agents can't call a spade a spade (kkkrad alert). Well okay, of course I do. Because detached sounds better.

It's just far too rainy afaic. I'd be looking miles, miles east of there - somewhere that makes the Dales easily accessible, with the Lakes more of a short day excursion. Richmond, Rippon - that kind of area.

I think it's just a typo sort of thing, anyone can see from the photos that it's semi, so they couldn't think they'd be fooling anyone.

Rain? I have to admit, having lived all my life in the south of England, I'm pretty used to lots of good weather, and this is a concern, how will I adjust? But the east side of the country up there is easily accessible for riding purposes. I've not looked at the east cos it seems a lot more crowded, many areas very run down etc. Not being snobbish, but that's just the impression I get as a soft southerner! Laughing

I'll start at Carlisle at least, could always move again in a couple or 3 years if it doesn't work for me, and in that time, it'll be easier to look around and learn about the regions close by than I can do from the south. Gotta move up that way somewhere, cos I couldn't afford a bleedin shed down here in the south.

I think its a Northern thing. We spent a few days checking out properties in that area recently. I noticed that as well: it's not just a one-off typo with that property, they really do seem to have a thing about calling semi-detached as "detached".

A bungalow is detached. A mansion is detached. A semi-detached house is not detached, even if its the last one on a row of terraced houses Laughing

Good price and looks tidy.
That would be at least 2x as much in North Yorks because it almost never rains here.

Also, chickenybits, do stop apologising for being a snob.

I don't reckon you really are, though, cos you're not uppity enough Laughing (i.e., if you really were a snob, you wouldn't apologise for being one, you wouldn't even notice that you were)

Yeah - the east, i.e. due east, of Carlisle would eventually take you to Newcastle and stuff. Which doesn't appeal to me either. And when I said Rippon, that's much more south east than I intended.

So having had another look at the map, I wonder what places like Richmond would be like? Northallerton doesn't seem much more than a few rail junctions from the little I've managed to see of it. So there may not be much in the way of options to the east. But I really would say do have a bit of a sniff over that way. I was genuinely surprised at how drier it is Hull and York way after moving here from the north midlands. It doesn't hurt that literally everything else you could ever care to mention is about ten times as good too. Wink

edit - Goddamnit I typed "don't have a sniff" and I meant DO.

One of the things that appeals to me about Carlisle is it's size. Big enough to have most of what I'll ever need, but small enough to have some character, not just a completely impersonal sprawl. Well, I'll see more for myself next week. I don't think rain's gonna put me off Razz

I was in Carlisle today, I live about 40 mins down the road. I'll be honest, moving there has never crossed my mind but if you want to keep it cumbrian but have all the links to the real world then its a good option. The weather round here is shit, theres no way of sugar coating it. This time of year its dark, cold and windy. Carlisle can be bleak and its nightspots are known for violence. It has an increasing immigrant population mainly on there nearby raffles estate (think it was once in a 'no go britain' documentary) but I think you are a bit away from there with that choice.

I think you could do a lot worse, at least at carlisle you have the rail links to scotland/london/manchester etc, its right on the M6. There are still some good shops in the centre and some industry on the outskirts.

There are a few quieter alternatives around that area with similar house prices such as Whitehaven, Workington, Maryport. Cockermouth and keswick are a bit more expensive though. The biggest employer locally is Sellafield but not a lot of carlisle people make the commute to work there.

Either way best of luck with your fresh start!

Oh and as for the detached thing, I live in the 'north' and I'm on the look out for a house using all the sites and calling a semi 'detached' is not the norm. Thats definitely a typo!

I have looked at properties in Whitehaven, Workington etc, but would probably mean a longer commute for work. I just don't really want to be a commuter if I'm honest. Prices are really competitive in those towns though.

I'm used to city life, and guess I'm missing some of that here in rural Oxfordshire; basically, I'm a lazy bugger and want my place of work, shops etc on my doorstep! Laughing

I'm not big on night life. Used to get into a few brawls when I was younger around Romford, so none of it's new to me, but I'll be avoiding that kind of thing now. What city centre isn't ruined by drunkeness and violence on weekend nights in this country these days? Sad

York seems surprisingly civilised from what I can gather. Obviously it must kick off a fair bit, but I honestly haven't seen much evidence of shenanigans.

What is it that you do Chickenstrip?

House prices are good around here, Im on the outskirts of whiutehaven in an end terrace. Its extended downstairs, two bedrooms, gardens front and back, parking and a double garage. Hopefully it will sell for 120k in the summer. I'll probably never have a double garage again!

If you like city life then you would hate Whitehaven, I can go to the supermarket at prime time like 5.30 on a friday night and its still quiet. We have no cinema, no nightclubs, no big shops, no kfc ...... Nothing. But it is quiet.
