I haven't put this in Dear Auntie cos my decision is made, but if anyone has any thoughts on the place, I'd be interested to hear.
I've got next week booked off to go and view a couple of properties, have a nose around the city and surrounding area (weather permitting!), and stumbled across this one, which I have arranged to view:
https://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/35670662#S3zOVEJvPwKfXxBH.97
Looks perfect to me, dat workshop!
So yeah, I'm gonna take my chances on that city, main reasons being I don't want to be stuck in some one-horse country town again, it's near my beloved Lake District for fell walking, got plenty of options for good biking days out, will allow me to explore Scotland some more, near the M6 for getting to other regions if need be etc etc.
Found a couple of likely places for future employment, with whom I will at least leave my CV as a starting point for my job hunt, but I think I'm going to take a summer sabbatical first, and have some fun on the bike (bikes? still got my heart fixed on that Street Triple ). So far, all is looking good, just depends on when my current house sells (going on the market in the next couple of weeks), but local estate agents reckon it'll be an easy sell.
Bring it on! ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

No snobbery here, I just don't know why estate agents can't call a spade a spade (kkkrad alert). Well okay, of course I do. Because detached sounds better. |
I think it's just a typo sort of thing, anyone can see from the photos that it's semi, so they couldn't think they'd be fooling anyone.
Rain? I have to admit, having lived all my life in the south of England, I'm pretty used to lots of good weather, and this is a concern, how will I adjust? But the east side of the country up there is easily accessible for riding purposes. I've not looked at the east cos it seems a lot more crowded, many areas very run down etc. Not being snobbish, but that's just the impression I get as a soft southerner!
I'll start at Carlisle at least, could always move again in a couple or 3 years if it doesn't work for me, and in that time, it'll be easier to look around and learn about the regions close by than I can do from the south. Gotta move up that way somewhere, cos I couldn't afford a bleedin shed down here in the south. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I think its a Northern thing. We spent a few days checking out properties in that area recently. I noticed that as well: it's not just a one-off typo with that property, they really do seem to have a thing about calling semi-detached as "detached".
A bungalow is detached. A mansion is detached. A semi-detached house is not detached, even if its the last one on a row of terraced houses ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Also, chickenybits, do stop apologising for being a snob.
I don't reckon you really are, though, cos you're not uppity enough (i.e., if you really were a snob, you wouldn't apologise for being one, you wouldn't even notice that you were) ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Yeah - the east, i.e. due east, of Carlisle would eventually take you to Newcastle and stuff. Which doesn't appeal to me either. And when I said Rippon, that's much more south east than I intended.
So having had another look at the map, I wonder what places like Richmond would be like? Northallerton doesn't seem much more than a few rail junctions from the little I've managed to see of it. So there may not be much in the way of options to the east. But I really would say do have a bit of a sniff over that way. I was genuinely surprised at how drier it is Hull and York way after moving here from the north midlands. It doesn't hurt that literally everything else you could ever care to mention is about ten times as good too.
edit - Goddamnit I typed "don't have a sniff" and I meant DO. ____________________ "Life is a sexually transmitted disease and the mortality rate is one hundred percent."

One of the things that appeals to me about Carlisle is it's size. Big enough to have most of what I'll ever need, but small enough to have some character, not just a completely impersonal sprawl. Well, I'll see more for myself next week. I don't think rain's gonna put me off ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I have looked at properties in Whitehaven, Workington etc, but would probably mean a longer commute for work. I just don't really want to be a commuter if I'm honest. Prices are really competitive in those towns though.
I'm used to city life, and guess I'm missing some of that here in rural Oxfordshire; basically, I'm a lazy bugger and want my place of work, shops etc on my doorstep!
I'm not big on night life. Used to get into a few brawls when I was younger around Romford, so none of it's new to me, but I'll be avoiding that kind of thing now. What city centre isn't ruined by drunkeness and violence on weekend nights in this country these days? ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
