Is this an unhealthy exhaust? Suzuki GSX 600F

Hi BCF People!

First time user abusing the forum for all your juicy technical knowledge I'm afraid.

I'm looking at buying a mates GSX 600F as a first bike, I'm just not sure about the exhaust. To me it sounds odd and I don't think there should be gases coming out of the area it is in the video:

I would really appreciate some feedback on what people think - is it ok? or do I need a mechanic to look at it?

A mate suggested it would cost £200 to fix as it's only the linkage between two parts of the exhaust (or something, I'm an idiot mechanically ) - somebody else suggested the gases could be coming from a drainage hole but I suspect that is in a different place on the exhaust.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated, as I would like to know if I need to negotiate with the seller.

Has it rotted away? Or is the clamp loose and could do with tightening? Either way it needs a few quid knocking off the asking price

RhynoCZ - thanks for the tip but I think it's a rust issue, the exhaust hasn't been changed and most of it is in tip top condition, it's just the section in the middle which gases seem to be coming from (I may be wrong!).

under_rated It might be a clamp - if it isn't how much would you be looking to knock off the price (it would be a garage doing the work )

It's blowing at the link pipe joint. This means that either the collector is rotted away or the sleeve gasket is damaged/missing.

It's blowing badly, and being a teapot it's probably rotted. If he's a mate he should let you remove the silencer to look. As soon as you do that the cause will be obvious. Look at THIS one and zoom in on the end bit with the slots in it and you'll see where it's nearly rotted out.

£200 to fix is bullshit. I'd fix that in 2 hours so long as the header bolts didn't shear and that's making the new part too.

It's not hard to fit a new exhaust, even I can do it The hardest bit is getting the headers off without shearing them in many cases. Plusgas, patience, and a good impact driver/hex keys will sort it.

Well, I'd try to refit it anyway, worth the try.

If you are gonna get a new one, then to get the headers off, use WD40 first. Spray the nuts, let it sit, then spray them again, let it sit and then take the nuts off. If you try to take off dry nuts that were not taken off in years, you are asking for trouble. Use a smaller ratchet and give it the initial impact to break the tension.

i had the same issue on my bandit 12,
stupid design really. i chopped the bipe back and welded a smaller pipe in its place so the link pipe would slide over it, rather than slide into the pipe

Looks the same as the Bandit - the whole system is stainless, except for the couple of inches where the 2 halves join, which is mild steel and rots out.

Chap in Longlife exhausts (in Swansea for me) welded in a stainless section for £80, didn't even need to take to downpipes off - just ride in, ride out
