Do I need to oil new clutch cover gasket?

I took off the clutch cover on my 2008 ybr125 to clean the oil filter. In my ignorance I put the existing gasket back on and it leaks when I turn the engine on. I have ordered a new gasket. Do I need to oil it or put some sort of sealant on before installation? Also do I need to clean the surfaces where the cover meets the clutch case? Best way to do this?

Cleaning the oil filter??? Inside the clutch cover??? New ones on me!!

I always oil new gaskets, some people do, some don't - I'm old school. And yes you need to clean the mating surfaces, a Stanley knife blade is good for a novice just be careful not to nick the surface. I use a 1/4" wood chisel that is very sharp but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't use chisels in a professional capacity.

Modern gaskets are meant to be used dry (although I doubt it matters if you oil it or not).

The most important thing is to clean the gasket face thoroughly.

I'd be very wary of using a chisel to do this unless you're very good: A sharp steel chisel will easily gouge the gasket face.

You'd be better off getting a piece of copper pipe, hammering one end flat and then filing that to a chisel point: The softer copper is much less likely to mark the gasket face.

Many small 4T engines have an internal oil pump/filter mechanism.

Just make sure the mating surfaces are cleaned thouroughly and not damaged! Personally, I wouldn't oil new gaskets. What does the manual for your bike say?

Gasket arrived. Will put it on this weekend. The manual doesn't describe how to remove/install the clutch cover and the Haynes manual simply says to install new gasket but doesn't describe how.
