Posted: 17:32 - 20 Jan 2015 Post subject: Dog ran out in front of me ... |
 |
|
Something happened today whilst riding and I thought I'd get your view on it. How would you have reacted?
Apologies for the size of the diagram below!
I was travelling in the direction of the blue arrow, to my left there were a number of parked cars (red dots). This was restricting my view around the corner. As a result, I decided to give my horn a quick few beeps, drop down a gear and slow slightly more than usual for the left bend.
As I come out of the other side of the corner, a man (yellow dot) loses control of his dogs lead, and the dog (orange dot!) comes running towards the front wheel of my motorcycle.
I had about a second to react and managed to do a counter-steer swerve job around the dog. In retrospect, I'm not sure I should have done this. As mad as it sounds - would I have been better just ploughing over the dog? I have dogs myself but I wouldn't risk my own life for a dog (apart from my own ).
After the swerve, I gradually accelerated away to get away from the dog. (Which was now chasing my back wheel).
To add insult to injury, the area of the road at which I had to swerve around the dog was slightly icy.
Breaking at this point would have been difficult due to the ice and I was given almost no time to react as the man / dog were right around the corner. There are also no pavements around this bend.
So I was wondering, what would you have done in this situation?

Hindsight is wonderful and natural reactions can be a pain.
I know when learning to drive was told don't swerve for any animals on the road (live in the sticks so rabbits, foxes, etc.). This is as you must stay in control.
However, natural reactions is to brake and/or swerve. So would probably done the same because that's how brain wired.
on not losing it though. Could have been an interesting insurance claim if not ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

Good job for avoiding the dog OP.
pdg you on your period?
I think OP was probably making the point that in that split second he chose the dog's safety over his own.
HURR DURR hitting a dog will send you off anyway! But what about that truck on the opposite side of the road you weren't looking at or aware of because you were busy swerving out the way of a dog?
In hindsight you could've got fucked harder by swerving and losing control/crashing into someone/thing or slipping on that ice, but you didn't so consider it a dodged bullet.
Would I have hit the dog in your situation? How the fuck should I know, it's never happened before, closest I've come to is squirrels/foxes on straight roads at night. You lot saying you would avoid the dog (moar fucking hero talk) are chatting bollocks cause in emergency situations you can't predict wtf the outcome will be with any degree of accuracy. |
