What length of uptimes do your permanently on home computers achieve. My pi backup computer has an uptime of 50 days at the moment.

I know amongst our many geeks here that'll get trashed. Laughing

A Samsung NC10 netbook running windows 7 has run continuously for more than a year here.
It records a loop of security cameras and acts like a print server over the network.

My ssh/squid proxy pi =

10:59:13 up 218 days, 22:44, 1 user, load average: 0.03, 0.03, 0.05

Power failure took it down. Sad

You're all losers.

Some of the equipment I helped to install on customer sites (Linux based) had an uptime of 2000 days. As I recall it had a bug where it crashed when it reached 2400 days uptime. That wasn't an easy one to find!

Not bad for what is basically a very advanced PVR!

Not long as I powered it down to move it recently.

Edit, 13.6 days just checked.

My old Nexenta NAS hit north of 500 days, that was running a Solaris kernel. I rebooted it to replace a failed drive - the chassis didn't support hotplug drives. The lack of reboots was probably more down to the lack of kernel updates more than anything.

I've migrated my NAS to Ubuntu now - if you want to keep current with Linux kernel versions, you have to reboot every couple of months or so. I don't bother rebooting that often though. The machine doesn't see a lot of the outside world, the security risks aren't enormous. I don't run apt-get update & upgrade on it very often, as there's a certain amount of fragility around ZFS on Linux and the DKMS infrastructure - it tries to dynamically recompile kernel modules, and if everything isn't just right, there'll be a compilation failure and I'll lose access to ZFS volumes post-reboot until I fix it.

Code:
[mars] $ uptime
 17:18:30 up 90 days, 22:52, 14 users,  load average: 0.01, 0.03, 0.05

Windows typically gets up to about 50 days, until the update / reboot nagging gets to me. I'm more concerned about keeping browser and flash plugin up to date, and disabling all other plugins, than I am with keeping super current on the latest fixes.

pendulum@bocks:~$ uptime
22:55:57 up 53 days, 21:53, 2 users, load average: 0.17, 0.05, 0.06

I had a home server running Slackware that made it past a full year's uptime. It was reset when we needed an electrician to add some sockets downstairs who needed to kill the power.

Ok,

let's just stop this right now. If you're not restarting your linux box you're not applying updates properly and you're more than likely still affected by the ghost vuln.

Uptime is inversely proportional to your ability to patch your linux machine properly.

I'll worry about ghost when my machine has reason to do DNS lookups for domains controlled by untrusted parties. This is a headless machine without a graphics card, never mind a windowing system, web browser, or any other typical reason to contact the outside world.

In principle, I agree. And professionally, I don't think the game of uptime as measured by the kernel is worth anything; it's down to SLA. Uptime means being online when required.

But for a home network, for machines that are not connected over the net, and that don't reach out across the net, and are not part of a broad rollout (e.g. an insecure network printer), I simply don't think the risks are very high. The target isn't worth much, a targeted attack isn't likely, and a generic attack is even less likely.

Like serving mail or web pages or files. Lots of people use services like this at home on devices like Raspberry Pis . The GHOST flaw is in gethostbyname and certainly, in the case of a mail server, it is going to do host lookups. A flaw that simply requires me to send a specially crafted email to your server to get it to execute code is not good. Add to that the likelyhood of "n00bs with pis" running servers under root and you've got the makings of a nice little botnet.

That's what Windows users all thought... A home network is likely to be more lax when it comes to security because "I just want it to work and turning off my firewall or opening all these ports or turning on upnp makes it work" ...

I will also have to assume that with a name like Rogerborg and an uptime like that you are already part of the botnet collective...

Indeed; but I'm not running a mail server either. I don't run any internet facing services on it, nor anything that automatically reaches out either, not even as much as whoopsie.

I stay a lot more up to date on Windows than I do on Linux, because it's the machine that sees the internet. But for a competent Windows user, security concerns too are overblown. I haven't had an infection of any kind since 1998, and 1995 before that, for a grand total of two. This machine goes through a network gateway where I can dump its network traffic, even if it had a rootkit I'd notice.

Windows security is more a problem for the people who will disable whatever protections necessary necessary to watch funny_kitten_video.avi.exe.

Do you have a link to that please?

Served from my pi. Have a go, chap.

You can even root my router while you're there.

Still alive, brah. Still alive.

There's some Chinese bumbots hammering away at root at the moment, but I'm not seeing your m4d 5pl01tz. When I can't see you, are you at your most dangerous, like a ninja?

Those users have got bigger problems than 'elite hackers' sending emails. You're talking completely hypothetically and extreme worst case scenario, not noteworthy risks.

I may find a really really old copy of Debian and not update it and see how long it takes for it to get hacked. I'm willing to bet a very long time....

Don't do it, man. It's the waiting that's the worst, tailing that auth.log, knowing that when ScaredyCat does put his rootkit where his mouth is, I won't even know I'm dead until I hit the floor. Pale
