As the title suggests, my visor seems to be covered in tiny scratches from where I wipe my visor with my glove. But my glove has a soft wiper on it and I can't imagine this would have scratched my visor to bits. When I look through it, it looks as though my visor has steamed up, but it's just the tiny scratches that make it look this way.

It's a HJC helmet, cost me a fair few quid. How come this is trashed in 3 months when my cheap ass Box helmet lasted nearly 2 years with a visor that's fine?

Any suggestions on a fix or do I just have to keep replacing my visor every 3 months? Sad

I bet it’s not the glove that’s scratched it, it’s the road grime.

Well the road grime hasn't bothered anything else and the tiny scratches go left to right. I've added a picture so you can see.

I would partially agree.

Winter riding and wiping your visor even with a soft wiper is akin to rubbing it with very fine grinding paste.

My helmet visor I usually end up replacing every year come spring. I try never to wipe a dry dirty visor if I can help it, that's the worst for scratching.

Carry a good visor cleaning kit, stop and clean it when you have to with visor cleaner and it will last a lot longer. Thumbs Up

I guess that makes sense. Doesn't explain why my crappy Box helmet visor is intact when I used to ride that through winter too. Sad

Hadn't seen that picture when I wrote the above.

That looks very like someone has either tried to clean it with brasso or something similar. That's mechanical damage from what I can see.

I clean it with Muc Off helmet and visor cleaner with soft tissue. I don't understand how it's got so bad. Sad

There was a change in BS standards many years ago now and before that they often scratched badly like that in normal use.
Something is dodgy about that visor it can't be up to UK spec.

Agreed. If you got the helmet from a reputable dealer or on line from someone like racevisors, go back to them and ask for their opinion. They might agree, or give you a discount on a replacement.

If you got it on ebay, Sad Probably out of luck.

I have HJC helmets and the visors have never gone like that.

All my visors go like that.

Had a brand new arai one look like that after 3 hours on the A1.

It's salt dust that causes it. Worst on motorways. Worst in conditions where the roqad is wet but it isn't raining.

The salty spray gets splashed onto your visor by wagons then dries in the airflow, leaving a film of salt. You see your visor splashed up, wipe it with your finger and it's fucked.

That's because salt is harder than polycarbonate and scratches it.

They don't do anything about it for the same reason they didn't make long lasting filament lightbulbs.

Why would it be? It'll E13 or similar, 'tested' in Luxembourg, by which I mean stamped or stickered as such with no way of verifying that the design has actually passed any testing at all.

You can try plastic polish like Meguiar's, heat or even a tiny bit of toothpaste and gentle polishing.

Any of them might make it worse. Or they might make it better. It's a hard life, and no mistake.

You can get plastic polish. It takes some time and effort but does work. I've got a bottle somewhere but can't find it so don't know the brand but google it and you should find some.

Looks like what happens when you wipe your visor with tissues or kitchen roll. Never use tissues or kitchen roll (unless it's Bounty). A yellow duster, microfibre cloth or soft sponge with plenty of soapy water is what I use.

I haven't had one even need changing before the helmet did the last ten years at least.
In the 80s you needed a new visor every year.
They should not scratch in normal (careful) use if complying with current standards.

I use plenty of water and soap with limited rubbing when cleaning visors, but still change them every year or sooner if needed. Just treat visors as a consumable like a lot of bike stuff. I always have a couple of spare visors, dark/clear for my lids.

Where's the best place to buy visors. I got a aftermarket one off ebay but it was little off like a mm. It still fit but did not line up perfect like the original.

Crystalusion

Get some of this. Put it on your new visor and it works a treat.

Helps bead of water. Allows you to wipe a dirty visor and leaves no scratches.

You will find that, the soft patch will collect muck and scratch your visor far more than a harder surface.

I would go to somewhere like Racevisors for a new visor.
pay peanuts and you end up with a visor that may not be upto the job...

I have used this on my phone for 6 months now with great results. A added bonus was that the sheets were still wet enough to do 3 phones as well a my motorbike helmet visor. The results on the visor are just great. 6 months on and no new scratches despite being rubbed on a regular basis to remove flies and water. Even helps to keep water droplets from sticking to visor. All in all a great product.

My review. This is the 2nd batch of this I have used and the review was based on 1st batch.
It was applied to a 2 year old visor that was already scratched. Now on a new visor and not a mark on it since begining on November despite heavy usage.

It's called PolyWatch and is used for removing scratches from watch glasses.

Very effective on visors, leaving them with a super-smooth finish that helps repel rain.

I was going through HJC HJ-09 visors at an alarming rate. They seem very soft. My Shark visor seems to be fairing much better.

I have used toothpaste on indicator lenses and suchlike and it works well, not tried it on visors but I might test such ideas on a retired hjc visor before daring to mess with my shark visor should it get scratched.

sounds similar to what happens to car headlights after time, where they get scratches on due to the crap off the road, a tip i got told from a friend of mine whom is a professional valeter, try getting some toothpaste on it and rubbing that in it should help clear the scratches up, if your unsure try googling using toothpaste on headlights, cant guarantee it will work completely but should help Smile

Methylene Chloride vapour cleans those headlights up a treat. Might work on a visor.
